internal hard drive used in a firewire/usb2 enclosure question

I jumped on that office depot deal on the maxtor 300gb drive for 149.99. I knew it was an internal drive, but I have a laptop. I placed the drive into a brand new enclosure I just bought and connected it to my usb 2.0 port. The MaxBlast software could not see my drive therefore I couldnt format it. I think my solution has to be that I format it in a desktop and then connect it to my laptop. My buddy just did the same thing with his laptop and a hard drive from his old desktop that is shot, and his recognized it instantly but his was already formatted from before. I was just wondering if anyone else has ran into this problem.

Does Disk Management see the new drive?

If not, check the enclosure instructions as they usually require the HDD to be pinned as master or it won't be detected.
