My son would like to be able to connect and extra internal CD burner to his laptop. Is this possible?

Probably with a notebook ide to normal ide adapter. It would be a nuisance however. You're better off buying a usb or firewire external enclosure and putting the drive in that.

Do you mean a second optical drive, or replace the current one with a CD-RW? If you mean replace the current one, then yes you can probably do that. I think Newegg sells a laptop CD-RW drive. If you meant a second one then it depends on the laptop. A few laptops (like the Dell Inspiron 8x00) can take a second optical drive. Most can not.
