Is it faster to have a pci cable modem than to have an external one? I mean since it goes directly to the pci card and not through an ethernet card.

thanx

USB 1.1 is 12Mbps, Ethernet is 10/100 or 1000Mbps with 10/100 being the most common (1000Mbps equipment is expensive) and PCI is 1048Mbps. Cable internet services are normally 4Mbps and below. So having a cable modem on any interface be it USB, PCI or Ethernet will make no difference in download speed.

I would stay away from a USB modem if at all possible They are troublesome and flakey, at least in my experience anyways.

And I can't say I've ever heard of a PCI cable modem. I've only seen Ethernet and USB.

As stevewm points out, a PCI cable modem is not going to help since the cable speed is much slower than PCI/Ethernet/USB. Also this PCI cable modem strikes me as an extremely bad idea since it can't be plugged into a router or switch.

ZOOM has a internal PCI cable modem on the market...

Its not exactly a bad idea... Its not the most logical, but its not bad..

If you wanted to share your internet with others, you'd have to add a NIC to the system, and then connect that to a switch.. That system would be essentially a router

We got charter cable here about 4 months ago, it is a tier system with the least expensive being 128/128 for this they install a internal pci modem. I have not looked at one of the modems but my son has one, I may go over there tommorrow and take a look in the case.
They must work OK, he is happy with it. This is the first so called broadband we have had here. I just did a little search and found this.

Zoom's lowest cost DOCSIS 1.0 (1.1 upgradeable) cable modem. This Microsoft WHQL approved internal for Windows 98, Me and 2000 computers provides easy Plug and Play installation in an available PCI slot.
