My drive is a WD 45GB and it's about 2.5 years old. OK, here's the problem and I have noticed this problem since a few weeks ago: the drive spins up and spins down occassionally during a Windows session and or during a reboot (soft reboot). Usually if the HD spins down and up again during a Windows session, it will freeze my whole computer. Today, I have noticed the probelm furthermore. During my Windows session (just normal broswing web sites), the HD spins up and down numerous times and I immediately turned off the PC. After a few minutes, turned all and seemed okay.
OK, what I did after that problem was run the WD DOS diagnostic utility from diskette. However, when I was in the main menu selecting the "Extended Testing", the HD spins down and up! Then, the whole program freezes. I have tried chaning the IDE cable to a new one, still same problem. I have also tried just plugging in the power connector for HD w/o. the data cable, I let it ran for about 30 minutes and there was no spin down and spin up even after a few hard reboots.
So, I don't know if this is a power supply issues or an HD issue, as of now, the HD runs smoothly, please advise, thank you in advance.
