wow it's like I'm telling you people to have 1 child and no more or something...

All I wanted was a logical explanation.

We had three cars for a long time. I had two cars before I was married. Both paid for. One was my daily driver, one was for fun. Now we have two because the garage can only hold two. If we had a 3 car garage I would probably buy another car.

I'm not ragging on them or anything - they're nice people... but it does not make any financial sense.
Mabey not to you, but to many people it does.
Registration, inspection and insurance costs are minimal. Keeping that third car on the road may only be an extra $20 per month. $20 a month won't break most peoples banks. If these minimal costs break you bank, then you have financial problems and your view on financial responsibility will be skewed due to them.

It helps a lot to have an extra car around when one of them breaks down and needs to go into the shop. It costs more to tow and fix that car while trying to figure out the logistics of getting everyone where they need to go.
Many people also have winter cars. There are plenty of reasons to have more cars than drivers in a household.

A Miata? What a cool guy!

I hope he doesn't rice it out like that silly Eclipse. Assuming he would have bought performance mods, if he would have thrown all that money from the crap he bought for the Eclipse, into the Miata, he could have had a wicked fast car. Oh well, he is is stuck in a FWD overweight pig 🙁.

why do you think it is wierd?

the oldest car isn't worth enough to take the time to sell it and having a spare is good if either of the other cars needs to go into the shop for repairs

yeap same here. My wife drives a 97 ford escort to work. thats the only time its driven (has 89k miles). Then we have a 02 taurus and i have a 98 F150 (though thinking of trading it in and getting a newer one).

my parents have 4 cars for 2 people at home. 2 for summer driving, and 2 for winter (4 wheel drive).

Actually if he had a Miata, that may be why he has a spare vehicle. My brother has a nice Miata, but it sucks balls driving in the snow and ice. Plus he's 6' and it gets a little cramped in there on long trips. It's his baby though, and he wouldn't trade it for the world. Well maybe for a Boxster...

For about a year I had two cars for myself: One was my fun car, and the other was the more sensible car. I sold the sensible car, because it was no longer sensible to own two cars 😀

They're a young couple and the dude is obviously into cars but they use all 3 at random times. It's not like any is a weekend car or a collector's car. They've got an '02 Eclipse that looks like something out of 2Fast2Furious (no joke, carbon fiber hood and a big wing), a Miata, and a Matrix (for the wife).

I'm not ragging on them or anything - they're nice people... but it does not make any financial sense.

Alot of people have cars that are weekend toys... better known as garage queens...
he obviously loves his Eclipse and its
a: little too radical for dailiy driving (ie big big turbos and heads or bad gas milage)
b: wants to keep it low milage and keep wear and tear down..
c: a project car thats not 100% complete
whats wierd about this..
my dad keeps a Corvette in the garage he never drives except on perfect days or weekends...

I had a 800hp Mustang that spent most of its life except Saturday nights and Fun Ford Weekends int he garage...
just wasnt a practical daily driver.... 7 miles to the gallon and very high wear parts...
but damn fun on weekends to take to the cruise strip where the other muscle cars hang out...

My ex-roommate had 4 cars and a scooter. And he's just a college student working as delivery boy in the evenings.

Every body has a different way of spending. Some like to spend on food, other like to splurge on vacations, etc. You never know what they have in mind. It wouldn't be weird unless you have talked to them and ask for their reasoning.

Please note that as of me, I wouldn't have those kind of spending on car. Right now I am married, and we only have one car. My wife ride BART to san francisco for work.

I have 2 cars...

2004 Dodge SRT-4 (Dont drive in the winter/rain/etc)
1995 Plymouth Acclaim - Winter beater, car for useless crap that I dont care about...
