Interesting XP Home problem

I've just come back from a friends house after spending a couple of hours trying to get his XP Home machine online with no success. The machine is a basic compaq and it is connected to a cable modem through a hub. It shares the connection with two Win98 machines, which can get online with no problems. The one interesting thing that I found was that there was no DHCP # displayed when I ran ipconfig and when I ran ipconfig /renew, the operation timed out saying it couldn't reach the dynamic host. Anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions?

Did you manually try to input all IP's? And did you try a different port on the hub?

From the ISP perspective (unless your friend has Multiple IP acount) he his trying to cheat the them! Why should they give him a second IP?

did not manually try to input all of the IPs, but we did try using a different port on the hub and also tried bypassing the hub altogether with no success.

I believe that they do have a multiple IP account, as they already have two computers online...however they did not specifically inform their ISP that they would be adding another computer.

I should also add that the connection was working for a couple weeks and then cut out. I did check the wire to make sure that wasn't the problem and it was not.

quick addition:

I had a friend call me tonight saying he couldn't hook his laptop up to his cable modem at home. After a little fiddling, he was able to get it by first running ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew. So I went back to the first computer and tried the same thing without any luck...any more ideas?

I guess that all the millions of users that are using Cable/DSL Routers are "Suckers".

As far as your friend is concern he No need for Router he can just log to the ISP what ever he likes?

Wont that happen if you have the same XP license installed on more than 1 machine, they wont network?

I don't know about the ability to network, but I know that Windows Update will choke on it, unless they're the Corporate (Volume License) version.
