Interesting read Desslok, but I think Brendan is wrong IMHO.

Semi-interesting but only half-right.

Yes, hard drives will be omnipresent for media storage.

No, DVD-R/-RW will not disappear in a few years. He mentions backups but doesn't seem to realize how important storing 4 GB vs. 700 MB per disc is to many people. He doesn't get that people will want to transfer home movies to something safer than HD and will want to send home movies, photos etc. to family who might only have dialup and no home theater PC (but a DVD player). Also sometime soon portable and car DVD-R players will replace CD players (40 regular CDs on one MP3-DVD disc) since people want something that plays "normal" CDs too.

I agree with you 100% Dave. Not everyone will have broadband and PVR's So IMHO we will be seeing DVD-r's for awhile.

I was just going to post this. It's an interesting article and he brings up some good points, but I highly doubt recordable DVDs (not just DVD-R as your thread title states) are going to disappear in the next couple years. With all these DVD players being sold during this Christmas season and last, people want to USE these DVD players for something. Why not burn your home videos to DVD? They'll last longer, look better, plus it just sounds and looks better when you whip out a DVD of your kid's birthday party. 😉

I'm going to wait until I can get a DVD recorder for around $100 (after rebates, of course 😉 ). It's getting close with deals popping up at $150 (after rebate), but it's not quite there yet. Plus the media is just crazy expensive at this time.

i think dvd-ram looks nice. 9GB of storage, and no special burning garbage, you just write to it like a hard drive. backing up 9+GB of mp3's to cdr's sucks ass.

now if only they were a liiiiitle cheaper 😉

Interesting read, but wrong, Tivo market penetration isn't that great & folks can "share" DVD's

<=== Hugs my DVD burner/DVD X Copy/5 disk DVD player😉 I've got a PVR too😀
