Interesting thing happened to my phone this week...

On Saturday morning at 7:30am, I went to the bathroom to prepare for work. I put my phone on a roll of tissue paper by the sink and started admiring myself in the mirror. Okay, I lied about that last part. I was just feeling my skin trying to determine if I should shave today or tomorrow and I suddenly felt a bump. It was a small zit and I busted it. When it popped and the fluid started coming out I quickly frantically tried to grab the tissue paper on the sink and in the process hit it by mistake. The phone fell off into the toilet while the tissue paper I hit rolled on the floor. Realizing how much I paid for the phone, I didn't even bother waiting to get the gloves. I dug in and grabbed it within 3 seconds. It was one of those fight or flight moments. The phone was still on and working but it started making numerous chirps and the screen kept changing to Accuweather, and loading various Samsung apps I have never loaded before asking me for permissions to click agree. I kept hitting the back button each time, but it kept on doing the same thing. I grabbed the dry microfiber cloth that was on the zinc counter and wrapped the phone around to dry it for the time being. It still kept making stupid chirping noises and loading stupid Samsung apps. I took my shower, brushed and was all ready at 8:20am. I came to use my computer and started searching Google for "phone in water" and other similar terms. I read somewhere that mentioned opening the phone up and soaking it in rice. I didn't have the time to do that because If I didn't leave by 8:30am, I'd be late for work. I took the microfiber cloth that was wrapped around the phone and took my baby with me. I got to work and decided not to bring it with me since it would be useless. I was tired of those chirping noises and also wanted to conserve the battery which was already at 22% from not charging for two days so I turned off the phone and left it in my car until I finished work. After entering my car in the evening at 6:30pm, I tried to turn on my phone to checkup on it, and there was no life. I was disappointed and my heart suddenly slowed down. When got I got home around 8pm, I plugged my charger to the phone and some kind of battery warning came up...The phone still wouldn't turn on and it wasn't charging either. continued using my computer to see what I can do. Somehow I found a "seemed" to be a reliable phone repair shop in Ohio that listed my problem that Saturday night, but wanted something more local so I can see them working on the phone in front of me and there won't be a chance that it would be stolen or such. I searched locally and found a phone shop to call on Sunday evening. Our convo went like this...
Me: Samsung Galaxy S II fell in water.
Some lady: Is that the T-Mobile version?
Me: No, I have the more superior international Exynos version.
Some lady: Let me ask one of our techs.
...
Some lady: No, we don't do that phone.

I worked Monday morning and got home at 4pm. I decided to give the Ohio shop a call. The female that answered my call was very polite and professional. I told them and she suggested I send it as soon as possible. I was going to go to the post office and checked our mail and there was none. Gah...Public holiday. I went to FedEx Kinkos and dropped the package around 6:15pm to be shipped. They gave me an estimated time of Wednesday with no time of the day. I had to work all day Wednesday due to my partner being in an accident. I checked FedEx tracking and the item was delivered that morning. I called this morning and told them about my phone to see if they received it and they said yes and that it would be worked on today.

F.A.Q:
-Did you shave that day?
No.
-Was there poo or pee in the water when this happened?
No.
-Did someone poo or pee in the water the water that morning?
Not that I know off. I was the first one to wake up that morning. We have one of those bleach things in our toilet bowl, so I'm more worried about the corrosive chemical damaging my phone than any nasty germs.
-Who did you use for your repair service and how much?
$45, http://www.repairlaunch.com/
-How much did it cost you?
$45+$17=$62 FedEx fee for sending a $450 worth of product
-What would you have done if your phone couldn't be repaired?
Buy a used $50-100 PoS Android phone on Craigslist and hobbled along until A15 cores from Samsung and TI came out. I may even purchase another Galaxy S II brand new. To be honest, I have no idea what I would do.

The fact that they were able to fix it for $45 means they probably just dried it out, which is something you could have done for yourself. Still, it's a good sign that all it needed was a drying, since it means that most likely nothing was damaged.🙂

im surprised you didnt turn it off immediately.... one of hte first things i would've done would be to rip out the battery. that's exactly what i did when i spilled a yogurt drink all over my MBP a few months back. I ripped the power cable out and the battery and proceeded to dry it. Lucky though your SGS2 is all back to norm. I'm guessing you would probably buy another one.... I don't think you could live with a crap-phone 😀 at least that's what I would do. Now that I have an SGS2 at least, if I say broke my Nexus S that I was still using last week, I would without a doubt step up to the SGS2 immediately, or use it as an excuse to upgrade to whatever phone I wanted to get anyway.

Yup... ALWAYS pull the battery when you get the phone wet. NEVER turn it on until you know the inside is dry, and the best way to know is to keep it in a bag of dry rice overnight.

Probably. At one point, I even considered looking up the phone specifications for max temperature, and turning on my mom's blow hair dryer. Somehow one of my brain cells advised me against doing that, so I didn't bother carrying out that thought.

I was under the impression that they would need to replace/change the USB port which was why I sent it in?
I rushed to judgement to do what I did because the first store claimed that if there's any corrosion the mainboard, there is no hope and was trying to get me to bring my phone to them ASAP until they found out I had an International Galaxy S II.

I've never been in this situation before. Live and learn.

That's what I would have done as well, but I read Anand's benchmarks on Krait earlier this week and saw his bold warning in the review to "hold off on purchasing or upgrading any phone."

One thing I learned about this whole incident...Having your main number with Google was both a blessing and a curse for me.
Blessing:
-I can log on to my email or Google Voice, read and respond to ALL text messages. My cousin asked me you sent your phone for repair, how are you still able to send text messages? I responded by telling her "Magic." She responded by saying "Ahh...The wonders of technology."
-I can see all missed calls and simply just call those people back.
-I can listen to voice mail without my phone.
Curse:
-I didn't have any spare GSM phone on hand(I've been a Verizon customer for years). That Galaxy S II is the only Android GSM phone I have. The Nokia E71 I received with Straight Talk doesn't count because there's no Google Voice app for that. And I refuse to use my Straight Talk number because I don't want anyone calling or texting me on that number, period. That's what my Google number is for. If I had a spare GSM Android phone sitting around, this curse wouldn't even exist.

This curse will only be temporary...When I upgrade to A15 or later in a year or so, this Galaxy S II will become my spare.

Could of just your phone in rice for a week
When my phone did not come on that evening, using rice was the last thing on my mind.
It takes a whole week to dry a phone in rice? 😱
Now, I don't feel too bad about ignoring this rice idea.
