interesting question about shutting down on windows machines

I just recently installed xp and when i shut down it takes forever, just sits there, not doing anything like accessing the harddrive for like a good 20 seconds.. any reasons?

but thats not the major question

It stays at the "its now safe to turn off your computer" screen and i have to power down manually now!
I havent had to do that since the first runs of windows 95 on my 200mx box 6 years ago.. i reboot into win98 and it shuts down in a matter of seconds.

Why does it do this and is there a setting to change it? Especially the manual power off.
Thanks guys!

ack.. control panel --> power options. check "enable APM" (or something similar)

if thats not there or doesnt work you probably installed windows with ACPI disabled, and your HAL is fux0red.
