I am reading "Sams Teach Yourself Coldfusion Express" and it says ".com is used for commercial domain (most domains fall into this category)". I then realized the vast majority of sits using .com shouldn't be, take this website for example.

Yeah, it's been that way for a long time. Doesn't matter as much now since there are a ton of other TLDs. But between .com, .org, and .net, .com always seemed to be the better catchall for groups that weren't non-profit.

Even though Google gets smarter by the second, .com TLD websites will always be the first sites people hit when searching. For the average internet surfer, "something.com" is what they'll try to hit.

Quick...someone explain to the OP that .gov is for <ready?> Government web sites!!

It'll probably blow his mind if we tell him that .org is for...ORGANIZATION...originally intended for non-commercial/non-profit entities...so we won't bring that up just yet.

Incomplete. .gov is only used in the United States.

.com is the most recognizable TLD in the world, so why wouldn't people use it?

fobot.com
the original intent of what types of entities use the different tlds had a fatal flaw, it was subjective and/or uninforceable
