Below is an opinion piece from today's Hartford Courant:

Susan Campbell 11-2-08

I think she makes some enlightening points:

How would America have reacted if it had been Barack Obama ? not Sarah Palin ? who brought five kids onstage at his party's national convention?

Imagine, too, if one of the Obama children had been a pregnant, unmarried teenager?

Consider this: What if John McCain had been the former president of Harvard Law Review (a line on Obama's résumé) or, conversely, Obama had finished near the bottom of his class (a line on McCain's)?

Barak Obama is replaying the role of Jackie Robinson, but this time in politics instead of pro baseball. He has to excel to be even considered.

Something to think about when you are deciding which is the best candidate.

'New organs of perception develop with need.' Right now millions of people are burning with need. They have just seen 8 years of monstrous disaster when they just voted for their golden age. The cognitive dissonance has awakened a few of these sleeping beasts and the measure of the man will, for some of them, now shine through.

I'm really not sure what her point is. If McCain had been President of Harvard Law Review, that means he'd be a different person (and possess a different intellect) from the person he actually is. Same for Obama having five kids and graduating near the bottom of his class.

People are who they are BECAUSE of who they are. Number of kids, academic achievements, profession - all these are a reflection of what's inside.

If Obama had all the outer trappings of Sarah Palin, and articulated things the way she does, I think I'd move to Canada.

Obama is a man that has thrown himself under a bus?

I think you have a little drool on your chin you might want to wipe off.

Her point is simple-a black man with McCain's resume wouldn't get in the door, no chance at all.

They say your college grades only really matter for your first job after you graduate. Beyond that, it's all about experience. McCain has been a senator for 20 years, which is a bit more important than his grades at the naval academy 50 years ago. If Obama traded resumes with McCain, including his senate experience, I don't think anyone would care about the grades.

I would say a black man with McCain's resume would crush a white man with Obama's resume (or lack thereof).

and you would be wrong. i guarantee that if Obama had finished near the bottom of his class, had three wives and five kids, one of which was underage, pregnant and single that the bigots would say thats typical of African Americans. you must look in a mirror and see your hate before you can work on solving it.

there's really nothing to compare it to, we haven't had any prominent african american senators with careers spanning 3+ decades.

It is the nature of bigots that they see every flaw they posses in the object of their bigotry and never notice the source of their inspiration.

She convinentley seems to forget the nearly 30 years in congress McCain possesses. Not to mention being a military liason to congress for years before that.

But the rest of her story works perfect in the vacuum of reality she created for it.
