Interesting job app response. How do I handle this?

... We have an intense interviewing process for the sake of keeping the great culture we have here at *companyname*. We are choosing to make as sure as we can that we’re hiring the right people, which is why am going to lay out the next step in this fashion:

I need to know how you will prove your desire for the position.

I am not looking for words at this point. Instead, I need to have solid, tangible proof that you have the desire and capabilities to do the job. (References are good, but that isn’t the answer that I need) And your work history is fine, but I still don’t know because I wasn’t there to see you do it. If you survive this question, the rest is all uphill.

My Response would probably go something like this.

Dear Mr. blah blah

I have to tell you that my working process is intense. I say what I mean and I do what I say. I am not a trained monkey, I am a professional cabinet installer who takes an immense amount of pride in my work. I have no idea what the magical answer to your riddle is but I suspect it is for a free sample of my work or a demonstration of my work. If that is in fact what you are asking for then forget it. I do not work for free. If you wish to give me a short trial to show my skills I am more than ready to do that but I will not work for free. I have to tell you that your request looks more like a Craigslist help wanted where you get scammed into doing a free job for someone. I won't do that. If you are serious about getting a top flight cabinet installer who will bring nothing but positives to your company than let's dispense with the riddles and get to work.

Best Regards,

Mr. ImnotatrainedMonkey.

He wants you to make a small deposit into his bank account, which will allow him to withdraw the millions he is about to promise you.

PS: Skip this dumb crap. If he can't come out and say what he wants, then feck'em. Pretty unprofessional.

Why not simply call the guy and say "I don't understand what you're asking for?". If he makes any comment other than a clear answer, explain to him that in construction communication is critical, and that no skilled craftsmen would start a project without knowing exactly what he's doing.

For the record, the "secret test" thing is bullshit. It's either a scam or the guy hiring you doesn't know how to determine what makes a good carpenter.

i will just go in and give him all the false promises that he's looking for, just for the LOLs, then post back if he really have the audacity to pull shit like having you work for free.

Wow! Just imagine what this guy will be like after he is your boss. I'd pass. I like my employers to be clear and concise not vague and mysterious.

That's my concern.

He's going to call you one day and say "I need you to go to that house they are building on the other side of the highway and prep the job site for the project."

If he says he needs to see a work sample, see you in action, etc, why didn't he just say that?

In OP's situation, I'd definitely call him and get a clarification, but I would consider this a warning sign that the boss-man expects you to read his mind and then gets pissed off when you don't - either because you ask too many questions and annoy him, or you don't question him and then he doesn't get the result he imagined.

I'd go over there and punch him in the face and then wreck his cabinets.

If this guy is going to be your boss, it does not sound like it will be fun.

I'd ignore that e-mail and move on. That's a terribly worded e-mail and makes little sense. I think they want you to work for free for a while.

Sounds like bullshit.

I agree. I once had an interview and the dude was crazy..wanted me to write an essay on some random word i never heard before.

What more proof does he need that you have the desire to do the job than the fact that you applied for the damn position?

Also, why does he ask for proof of desire and then in the explanation, reference proof of capabilities? Those are two different things.

Finally, the tense is funny. "How will you prove" is not the same thing as "prove" but the explanation indicates he wants the latter.

This should be fun.

This was my big confusion about what he wrote. I ended up responding by saying that I would forward him some pictures and explanations of a recent project, and that I'd be willing to work for a couple days as a trial.

He responded saying that he was impressed with my response and is wondering when I could come out for that trial.

My response is going to be, "after an interview." I'm not putting in a couple days of work until I know a lot more about this company.

Sure, any monkey can throw one up in an afternoon (as many here have pointed out), but installing a cabinet that is going to look good and last for the life of the house is something that takes a lot of talent.

Making a custom made cabinet that will last for the life of the house is something that takes a lot of talent. Installing the cabinet? Could you explain the step that requires talent? Is it making sure the cabinets are plumb and level? Or is it putting the screws into the wall? Maybe it's using a special clamp to hold the side rails of the cabinets together so they can be joined to give it as seamless appearance? Making sure all of the doors are adjusted to the same height?

I think it is making sure none of the drawers are blocked by any of the appliances.

Ask him if English is his first language. If he says yes, tell him you don't want to work for a moron and that you'll pass.
