Interesting info on 120GXP from IBM

There's an interesting post on the front page of Storage Review for any owners or would be owners of 120GXP's. The first question being the most important:

"Q: Would you recommend this drive in a server role?
A: No, the drive is intended to be on for no more than about 8 hours a day. If it were only used during that period and then shut down for the day, then it would be fine, but it definitely should NOT be used in a 24/7 role for those customers concerned with reliability."

I don't think it would be wise to recommend these drives to the noncasual user anymore with that kind of restriction on it. There is more interesting stuff that follows.

<< Q: Will this power on hours spec become involved with the warranty in future drives?
A: Probably not. Right now, this spec is a response specific to the GXP series. We may not even specify this spec in the future.
>>

That's a hint this same limitation may apply to the older GXPs as well. I'd be very curious to know the technical reasons behind recommending limited use for these units.

Hehe Maybe it has something to do like in dog years.. you know, 1hr actual use equals 7hrs use. So for every day you use your hard drive, it's like a week of operation 😉

Jeez, that's ridiculous. Even for an IDE drive 😀

No big deal personally, I wrote IBM off a long, long time ago. Their IDE hard drives suck, and their SCSI ones (including 36Z15) are unreliable.

Well it doesnt impact me personally as I intend to avoid IBM until they have clearly fixed whatever issues have plauged the 75GXP and to a much lesser extent the 60GXP. It's still way to early to make any conclusions on the 120GXP's RMA rate, even if I had such information which I do not at present.

Ever since they started specifying their drives were only suitable for 333 power-on hours per month it's become clear that they are most definitely not a valid option for my system, nor I suspect that of many other enthusiasts.

I tend to agree with that statement, and at least until it's proven any remaining reliability issues have been cleared up I will be reluctant to recommend it to anyone at all irregardless of usage.

It's unfortunate, as IBM drives have in the past been typically thought very highly of... and certainly they've long been near or at the top of the performance spectrum for each generation of drives.

I don't buy or recomend IBM drives anymore since the 75GXP series. This on top of it doesn't suprise me, but it will serve to strengthen my decision not to use IBM drives.

Lol, I'm doing just fine with my Quantum Fireball and Seagate Barracuda IV thank you very much. 🙂 I haven't touched an IBM HD since the 60GXP days...

Damn, that's crazy. My machine has been on 24/7 more than 4 months... that's it, no more IBM drives for me.

Um, I believe this refers to constant accessing and seeking. Not simply sitting and running.

Who here has their non-server HDD accessing and seeking constantly for more than 8 hours a day?

BTW, I have 6 75GXPs and 2 60GXPs running 24/7. No problems here.

While I have a whole load of IBM HD's chugging along nicely, I think I'll avoid them in the future until whatever issues they're having are resolved.

My 45GB 75GXP is still "running" fine after about 18months, but with all the bad things I keep hearing about their hhds makes me think I will avoid IBM in the future.

Thanks for the info.

Nope, look at IBM's official spec sheet for the 120gxp drives, it says Power On hours.

I'm guessing that this is a response to the lawsuit for the 75gxp drives. But I would personally hesitate to get any drives that limit the power on usage.

Ugh. I just got a 120GXP yesterday from Newegg.com. IBM products are unreturnable.
I never had any problems with my 75GXP and 60GXP, so I thought the 120GXP would be okay.
It makes audible, but not loud, clicking noises intermittently during heavy read/write loads. It started doing that right away, I had just installed it! I hope that's normal and not a sign of a problem.

Oh well, I'll just back up the important data files on my hard drive to another machine on the network, cross my fingers, and hope for the best.

Doh! Looks like AmusedOne needs to move all that p0rn to some other drives. 😉

EDIT: And damn! That new P4 monster! :Q You've really done well for yourself, haven't you?

"no more then 8 hours a day"!?!?!?!?!?
christ i havent shut my computer down in like a month gald i didnt get one of them

me 😛
15gig 75gxp, still going strong.

I contacted IBM Tech Suport!

My questuion: Can you explain the odd 11 hour a day requirem for reliability on the 120GXP drive?
IBM's Response:
Hello. Those are the recommended power on hours in the spec.
Heidi

I can not believe they gave this responce. Absolutely poor. I have two IBM drives a 75GXP 20GB and a 60GXP 40GB, never had any problems. But that response leaves a real bad taste in my mouth, I may never buy from IBM again.

IBM 120GXP Product Specification Document: "Recommended power-on hours (monthly) 333"
AmusedOne: "Um, I believe this refers to constant accessing and seeking. Not simply sitting and running."

Personally, i believe that a hard drive can't be simply "sitting and running" WITHOUT also having "power-on".

Maybe you should edit your comment to say "I hope this refers to constant accessing and seeking"

I was looking for another harddrive last night. So, I went to storage review and saw their 'interview' and quickly changed my power down setting for my hd to a hour. 😛 I have been running my 60GXP 24/7 for months now. I went through 2 75GXP's so I already knew I wasn't going to get an IBM drive.

Same here on my 60gxp!

Atleast it isn't loosing sectors and making cat scratch noises like the 75gxp's I had before it. :disgust:
