Interesting hardware problem

I'm building a rig based on an EPOX 9npa+ultra MoBo and an Athlon64 3000+ processor. I wanted to use an ATI AIW X600pro (PCIe) to do some minor gaming and video capture. I put the machine together, and the display was FUBAR. Absulutely unintelligible. I plopped in an old Voodoo card (PCI circa 1999), and everything seemed to work. So, I went to CompUSA, bought another X600, put it in and... FUBAR.
Bad MoBo right? (that's what customer support at Epox thought.
So, I took back the second X600 and RMA'ed my EPOX 9npa.from NewEgg (Wonderful people, those) When my new MoBo came, I put it together with my original X600 and... Same F#@$ing problem.
So, i figured I must be an idiot, missing something in the BIOS that switches from PCI to PCIe. Just to make sure, I went to Best Buy looking for a different card that uses PCIe. I came home with an X700, fully expecting the same problem. Guess what: the X700 in the PCIe works just fine.
So my question is, is it possible that the EPOX 9npa and the x600pro just don't get along? Or, is it still possible I've missed something in BIOS?

Oh yeah, I went all through that with Epox. The drivers are current. I think it might just be a compatibility problem.
