They're way too late with this in the age of Tivo, video capture cards and DVD burners.

Ouch, the tapes are really expensive. If people actually catch on though, they should sink in price soon enough. Aren't DVDs smaller and of the same or better quality?

I don't see this catching on at all. As soon as Tivo adds HDTV functionality and DVD recorders become common, this is gone.

DVDs = more available, probably same or better quality...and cheaper price

i believe the quality of HD-TV is better than DVD. Hence, one tape will hold 4 hours of HDTV and 24 hours of DVD quality video.

its too soon and the prices are too high...DVDs were close to $30 when they came out but by then VHS had stagnated quite a bit.

Can these things have menus, DVDROM content, etc?

This is being used in the broadcast/pro world.

I doubt it will find much penetration in the consumer world.

Still, there is no recording medium for HD in the consumer world yet.

For HD the only options right now are D-VHS and the Sony Blu-Ray recorder which isn't officially available in the US yet.

Pretty cool but way to expensive. That said, it supports up to 1080i and someone reviewed the JVC said the images were better than DVD.

Doubtful. Unless they have a really good software in the machine that can read and store menus/etc after insertion and play accordingly. It has some potential, but it seems a day late and a dollar short. I'd say there is probably a lot more potential for error on a tape than a DVD, but on the upside at least the tape will continue playing...
I doubt it will catch on because it just "seems" like an older technology.

it would be quite simple to add menus ect, it would just have a longer load time.
that 50gb is including a hell of a lot of error correction, theres probably room for about 70-80gb on the tape but some is duplicated to stop errors

Agreed. When I said doubtul I meant that I don't think it will happen. Of course it could happen.

Errr... these have been out for years guys.... it's not new.

It first came our for Satelites recordings and has been adapted to HDTV. It isn't going to fail, but it isn't going to take off either. Tapes suck.

I'm surprised this hasn't been out a lot earlier, people used to make crude digital backups to their vcr's over a decade ago.

Tapes are linear.
Tapes wear out.
Tapes are vulnerable to magnetic fields.
Tapes are vulnerable to heat.
Screw tapes.

Magneto-optical is the l33test storage medium. I want 30GB minidiscs.
