Interesting Dual NIC Question

Hey guys, first post here so thanks for help in advance. Preface this post with the fact that I am using WinXP-64

I recently got my new rig running and want to try something a bit different with an extra NIC I have. I currently have access to my school's very fat, very managed pipe. Most services are shut down save for the very basics. I also have ADSL, which has been my service of choice due to the heavy restrictions.

I want to setup my system to www/email through one card, ftp server through the other card. I could see this being done on a port level possibly, or application level. Is this possible or am I on crack?

IPTables could probably do this pretty easily if you're running Linux (or ipfwadm if you've got BSD). Otherwise, it's probably not going to happen.

Yea, windows aint too good at that sort of thing...

Get an old PC with one NIC and put the extra one in that. Install linux, then set up IPtables to forward the relevant ports to the connection you want.

/edit: actually you need 3 NICs, one to ADSL modem, one to school network, one to your XP box.

Its not really a security risk for the school. Plus he is only using the schools connection for things that are authorized and allowed (www, mail). Everything else is going over his *own* dedicated connection.

if someone takes over the multihomed box they have backdoor to the school's network, or possibly depending on how they have studii segregated

more computers is better, put one on each network and use a kvm
