Interesting delimma

I recently purchased an Apple 15" Powerbook for college and I love it. A friend of mine asked me if I'd rather have a laptop or a nice LCD for my dorm. Initially I pushed him to get a Powerbook, but then he told me he was bringing his desktop with him anyways. I told him to post here since theres a lot of people who have been through college, but he was too lazy to make an account, and I'm too nice so i'm asking for him.

Would you rather have an Apple 15" powerbook AND your desktop using a 19" Trinitron CRT with you in your dorm..

OR

Would you rather have no laptop- just a desktop with a nice LCD (he's looking at the Dell 2001fp)

You should've made a poll. But I vote for the second one -- no laptop. Is he a Mac fiend like you (what's the desktop?)?

Desktop is an Athlon 64 3200+... he's not a "mac fiend" but he loves mine and is intrested in trying one.

Last year at college I had an ibook and a desktop with a CRT. I found that having two computers was total overkill, especially on a college campus where there are TONS of great computers. I also found that with my CRT I had minimal deskspace. I vote for the second scenerio from my experience.

id go for the lcd

i have a desktop and have no need to get a laptop for mobility. There is no need to take a laptop to any classes, and if there was a need the college would tell u to get a laptop in the first place.

I rarely take my lappy to class. I brought my laptop, and regretted it. 2nd year I brought my laptop + desktop, but the laptop became little more than a Battlefield server for my apt.

The ONLY advantage of a LCD is desk space and power usage. If you have plenty of desk space, go for a glass monitor. LCD panels are still trying to catch up to CRTs in terms of speed. If you have a tiny desk, a LCD is a must. Otherwise, it is a matter of preference.

So, this is a very individual decision. A questions to ask is "If I HAD a laptop, would I use it?" When I was in college, it was nice doing work wherever I was at the time (cafeteria, library, etc.). OTOH, if this person likes to work at home and spend as little time as possible on campus, a laptop makes little sense.

Just my free advice, and worth every penny.

*EDIT* I remember routing a circuit board once while sitting with my GF (now my wife) in a Denny's. Priceless memories.

A modern 12ms LCD is perfectly fine for even the fastest FPS out there. LCD's are there, today.
