Interesting computer check-in this afternoon

I would feel bad except I've had to unclog one of these because some moron put a wadded up paper towel down the tube and people stuffed about 300 cigarettes into the tube totally packing it up.

My hands were black when I was done 🙁

Computers can get viruses; can they develop lung cancer, too? Or, maybe the owner reasoned that nicotine is used in some insecticides so it must be good for killing bugs!

My dad had to sort one like that out, except it was kept in a kitchen for about 3 years. The inside of that was completely full of dust and the case was completely covered in grease.

Convince the smoker they need a black MATX case and you won't see the staining on the outside anymore. (I think)

The IDE cables look nasty.

I bought a modded case online quite a few years back and the owner was a smoker. No staining, but I thought the odor would never go away.

I had a friend bring me his desktop with a story of continuous pop-ups and mysterious shutdowns.

I pulled a softball sized wad of fur from the HSF and case fan and blew out the case with an air hose. Stuff flew everywhere. I don't know how the fans were still turning. Anyway, no more overheating shutdowns.

THEN I ran a virus/adware scan and found over 10,000 "items of interest" so I sanitized the HDD and loaded AVG to offer some protection.

He has 8 kids and a dog or cat for each one. I'm now considered a computer guru, hehe.

Hilarious. Just another reminder (not that I needed one) of why I do not smoke!

John, you need to get out of the clean room a little more. I've worked on machines that you could not read the writing on the outside of the case and had to scribe around the optical drives to get the trays to open. 🙂

Wow.

I worked on a smoker's PC once. Disgusting. Everything inside's coated with tar, to which the dust adheres, so a vacuum cleaner can only manage to get the largest clumps. Everything else stays stuck.

Nasty! I'm really glad I haven't eaten lunch yet.

I once bought a used PlayStation controller online and I ended up getting a smoker one. The controller smelled (especially the cord) and it had all of this brown gunk in the nooks and cranies. I completely disassembled it and washed everything but the circuit board.

Has anyone here had big problems with getting a piece of smoker's hardware on ebay?

I remember working on a customer's PC (smoker, of course) and finding cigarette butts INSIDE the case.

Truly disgusting.

Gee! We've outlawed smoking everywhere else...why not make it a crime for a person to contaminate their own computer. We could give them a choice between being incarcerated at public expense, where the prisons could force them to quit smoking. or doing community service cleaning out public ashtrays. Or we could pay for public education, where people would learn that no one can be harmed by the bad habits of someone else. Or it could simply be pointed out, that no law forces any computer shop to accept a job that they don't want. Of course, it might help if the owner of that computer was taught how to clean his own computer, and to do it regularly.
