basically it shoots at 4K x 2K at up to 120 frames per second, i think.

a 35 mm CCD with a supercomputer attached for $17.5K

"Jim Jannard, 59, is the billionaire founder of Red. In 1975 he spent $300 to make a batch of custom motocross handlebar grips, which he sold from the back of a van. He named his company Oakley, after his English setter, and eventually expanded into sci-fi-style sunglasses, bags, and shoes. In November of last year he sold the business to Luxottica, the owner of Ray-Ban, for a reported $2.1 billion."

then he got pissed off because he wasn't satisfied with his cameras (he has a collection of about 1000 cameras) and started red.com.

slow mo skateboard video shot with Red, doesn't really show the detail but it's some good skateboarding.

The specs are impressive - the specs for the price are mind blowing!

120fps from a Seymore Butts movie!

I bet Sony is seriously pissed about this. They stand to lose millions if their HD cameras are supplanted.

They don't have the capital to do that to Sony.

Red is growing, but very slowly. A coworker has a Red, if you talk to him they're taking over the world. The reality is much different though, they just don't have much presence in the TV or movie world.

Viper GTS

Fixed

It's cutting edge, give it a little bit more time. And kudos if they do upset and uproot some large companies who have been sitting on their laurels for too long. All in war is fair. 🙂

i can't understand why a studio would pay the rate for Panavision - $25,000 for a rental for part of a movie - vs. $17.5K for the complete camera.

i got the spec wrong, the resolution at 120 fps drops to about 2K.

maybe AT will review one & take it apart. it probably doesn't have a Nehalem in it. whatever computer takes the data from the CCD element(s), that's like drinking from a fire-hose.

I've been watching the red since it came out, (mainly since I majored in film, with a specialty in cinematography) but I really want to get my hands on one. The body of the main unit is only $17.5k that doesn't include all the accesories that you need to go with it which takes the price up to about $50k. That said, it's an amazing price compared the Sony's Cine Alta that costs about 250k for the cine package and camera and it only shoots Full HD. This RED is really taking the $1,000,000 budget films by storm, it allows compaines who can't shoot film which still looks better than anything (~6k resolution with great color space and about 2 stops better contrast than digital) to still shoot amazing quality. I would like to get my hands on this camera.

They are serious stuff!

These were used for the shooting of what will be a DVD of the Journey concert in Manila on March 14 of this year.

With the new lead singer who sounds just like Steve Perry? 😀 Sweet!

Kevin "Caveman" Shirley was there. He said the video is gonna be absolutely awsome.

New lead singer just launched new website and forums

Shirly is the guy who mixed Dream Theater's "Scenes From A Memory" (did a damn fine job imho)

Usually when i work on someone computer who is complaining that the internet doesn't work, I had them go to red.com since i knew most of em would never go to Revlon's web site. Then poof all of a sudden it changed to the Red HD camera site and I could use that test anymore since I was going there a lot.
