If you do buy an AR-15, then make sure you get one with a 16" or longer barrel. An M4A3 with a 14.5" barrel will come with a permanently attached flash hider that will lengthen the barrel to 16" as required by federal law.

Don't ever start looking at all the cool parts you can add to an AR-15 unless you are rich.

lol you don't give us much to go on; is your preference for long range accuracy style shooting, fast or slow style firing, do you like watching things blow up or just tipping over, ect..

The AR15/M16 style platform is great for rapid fire combat style shooting that will give you pretty good accuracy out to 300 yards (that's crowding it for an M4 but there are folks out there that can). The AK style will also fit in this group, with a completely different feel.

Most of your high end accuracy firearms will be bolt actions, forcing you into more slower methodical shooting. I watched a guy punching holes in dimes at 200 yards with his .223 bolt action (making errings for his girlfriend). So unless you will go with two different platforms, you're gonna have to make a choice.

money will enter into it, as will accessories, durability, state legality, ect. For plain and simple plinking, i still love my ruger 10/22, and it won't break the bank to burn through 500 rounds in a day. Qualifying with the M4 is fun, and i love the ability to rapid fire plinkers at 200 yards, and not have to compensate for drop. Benching the 25-06 and chasing 12 guage casings at 200 yards is also very fun.

as someone also mentioned, if you go the AR15/M16 platform and choose to modify, the limit is only set by your pocketbook. I'm in the process of building an M4 from seperate components and visit these two sites alot BravoCompany and AR15, so maybe you'll see something that will help you decide. As much as i love the M4, i still go through alot of brass with my old 10/22 that i bought used in 1977 (best shot was a gopher at 97 yards, with standard hi velocity ammo).

good luck
