I'm somewhat of a gun enthusiast, without much gun knowledge (go figure).

I want to get a rifle for just regular target shooting and I really like the looks of the M16. The local Gander Mountain has M4A3's for sale at about a grand, as well as regular A3's for the same price, all made by bushmaster.

Is this a good buy? Am I even looking at the right rifles? Should I go colt?

They also have old used Russian M44's for 100 bucks. Would that be a decent bolt action to get for the price? Lemmie know what you think...

It all depends on your budget and what kinds of firearms interest you.

Bushmasters are as good as Colts for less money. Rock River Arms makes some nice ARs as well. You should be able to find the model you want for closer to $800.

The AR platform does make an easy to use and handle target gun.

The Russian surplus bolt guns like the M44s and M91/30s can be had quite cheaply ($70-$100) and surplus ammo is plentiful (remember lots of it is corrosive). They are good guns.

I have the m44. The 91/30 (longer version of this rifle) is a better choice. I have a bushmaster m4a2 and I love it. The m44/9130 ammo (7.62x54) is fairly cheap but corrosive, so CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN! The .223 is kinda pricey lately. I'll always love my dragunov more than my m44 or 91/30.

They have M44's and M91's both for $100. The m44's have collapsable bayonets (sort of, they arnt knives but grooved metal rods) and that looks kinda cool. I'll most likely get one of these before an AR so is the cool factor of the "bayonet" worth the shorter barrel?

The bayonet is pretty useless for target shooting and throws off the balance of the M44. Also due to the shorter barrel and lighter weight there is a lot more recoil from the M44 than the M91/30. It will hurt if you don't have it really snug against your shoulder (this I know from experience).

some of my Mosin Nagants

..stick with standard calib. like .270 .308 30.06. They are widly available and cheap compared to the wildcats or odd ball speciality calib.

Sako TRG-22 .308

Really overkill for target shooting and expensive... but very, very accurate and precise.

A sniper / sharp-shooter favorite.

1) Grab a Bushmaster or RR.
2) Buy 3 or 4 30 round mags
3) Buy a bunch of cheap Wolf ammo
4) Buy some bowling pins.
5) Profit

Get an AK in 7.62x39 and lots of ammo.

Alternatively get an AK in 5.56NATO and lots of ammo.

If this is your first rifle then you get a good semiauto rifle that doesnt need much cleaning or maintenance, and is very easy to field strip in anycase.

1. Don't buy at Gander Mountain
2. 7.62x54R is hard to find, and getting expensive. There hasn't been imports of it in months. .gov is sending it to Iraq
3. Best deal on .223 is Federal Value packs at Wal-Mart at $0.31 a round (200 round box)
4. I don't shoot steel cased ammo through good ARs, but will shoot it through a rifle I don't care much about
5. If you are willing to spend $1k on an AR, spend $100-200 or so more and get a Colt 6920

Any Colt AR will be top of the line. As close as to the real deal as you can get without joining the military :p
