Interested in buying an LCD Monitor

I am tired of my big clunky 21 inch CRT monitor that eats up most of my desk here at home, I was at a friends who had bought a 19 thin lcd type screen and I really want to get one yet the specs on these (to me) are a bit confusing.

Can someone give me the lowdown on what specs to look for or what brands might be the mid to better quality (or maybe even moreso which to stay away from)...

Mainly I do basic surfing and photoshop type work on my pc, emails, letters etc, no gaming really but might in future, I want to get a 19 incher if i can afford it and i'd like it to be black or dark grey if possible, and I have an ati all in wonder 8500DV video card and I remember reading something about HOW a flatscreen hooks up (DVI or something like that) but I don't know if my video card supports that or if it is even really neccesary...

Just sorta lost as to what to look for specs wise other than just flat out best prices and cosmetics.

Anyone have a few mins to explain to a newbie like me what to look for or stay away from when wanting to upgrade to a new lcd monitor?

Thanks in advance,

Bill 🙂

MaximumPC did a round up of LCD's 'that don't suck' for playing games. It gave a 9-Kickass score for the ones made by Sharp.🙂

Thanks for the input here I will start looking into the recommended models, trying to stay under $450 if i can and looks like I should be able to get a decent monitor within that range...
