Intels to enter the discrete graphics market in 2008

At this stage all plans are still rather vague, according to the sources, with Intel scheduled to deliver a more complete roadmap and specifications in the fourth quarter of this year. However, according to most of the sources, Intel will aim for the mid-range market in the initial stages with pricing targeted around US$300. In the current market, graphics cards at the high-end are priced at around US$800.

That's only one card... 🙁

I'll see it when I believe it. TnL is not even implented in their current drivers yet, and they expect to come out witha mid ranged 300 dollar card that will be competitive?

I wish them the best of luck, especially b/c the video market tends to stagnate whenever ATi or Nvidia gets that commanding lead (ie:now)... but its hard to take them serious when their existing solutions (IGP) do not have hardware supported at a driver level that the competition did over seven years ago

Let's hope it's true. CPU and Memory prices have all gone down.

Time for GPU to go down! $400 for a new card, wth are AMD and NVDA think they smoking?

I havent had any issues with Intel GMA950 and later graphics. Their drivers are fantastic for what they do. The GPUs suck at pretty much everything, but thats not the fault of the drivers.

What are you talking about? 400 USD for a brand new high end card is a step in the right direction. The last few generations have seen high end cards launched at increasingly higher price points.

Remember when the high end cards were 300 to 350?

Edit - I am curious to see what Intel can do with a dedicated discrete GPU development team. They definitely have the muscle to create a powerful product, and the marketing dollars to get it into many systems.

I am curious about this device but dont expect anything spectacular. Intel tried to make a mainstream GPU back in ~1998 called the i740 and for the most part was junk compared to the competition. They quickly got their clock rung by 3dfx and Nvidia and never tried again. Apparently somebody at Intel has a wild hair up their arse and want to try this again.

Its the first ive heard of the i740, very interesting. Wikipedia says "While Intel subsequently went on to become the world?s number one graphics company" on the article about the i740 so i assume they werent the number 1 back in 1998. I think they can pull it off since they are number 1 this time around.

Why was the i740 crap? Low clock speed? Less shader units/pipes/other? Sucky drivers? Was it meant to compete with the high end cards?

I think the release was around the same time that 3dfx was starting to have problems with the later voodoo cards and nvidia was putting out the tnt series.

Also there was nec with the powervr cards, tile based rendering.
Always wondered what would have happened if more companies had gone the tile based method, it had some nice advantages.

It was an interesting time, lots of innovations.

The i740 was delayed too many times and by the time it shipped was seriously slow compared to the competition.

Will intel's graphics card be a scaled up version of their current integrated graphics, part of the terascale project, or licensed imgtech ip?

i am sure it will be something new. They did hire many graphics engineerings last year and not only that they hired the guy that did the ray traced quakes mods. To me that sounds like intel wants to bring something new to the table and maybe that will include hardware raytraced engines.... oohhhh drooling....

But personlly i think it will be 2009 if they started on it last year or the year before. I know intel has some crazy work ethic but still 1-2 years to do a complete GPU from R&D to retail... no way

The more competition the better. I for one am sick of Nvidia, and now hate ATI for selling to AMD and coming out with crap. We need competition. Remember when the Atari 2600 ruled the roost? Remember all the really bad games they shoved out for the 2600 because there was no other game system to compete until Coleco came out and they sucked and the whole game market died for years until Nintendo came and revived it.
