Intels next chipset, i925x, will limit overclocking of FSB to 12% :|

"Alderwood will also have some limitations in overclocking, VR-Zone notes. The clock speed or PSB will be locked down when it exceeds 12% increase over its default speed and the method is by tracking down the source clock. Mainboard makers are looking forward to overcome the limitation. The claim may contradict with the report about increasing maximal processor system bus speed on i925X.

Officials for Intel did not comment on the story."

Disturbing if it's true, to say the least. However, it's too early to know and if it is the case and can be worked around one of the enthusiast oriented companies like Abit will manage it.

I don't believe they'll do it unless they collude with AMD to do the same. These two do have a technology sharing agreement of some sort so watch for it.;) However, These chip makers have basic performance parity and limiting ones OC would kill his sales in the enthusiast market.

It's a damn good idea though if they do it together....for their bottom lines.

From what i have read, overclocking won't be necessary. This chipset, is mean't to be a rocket sled.!!!

If Intel does this they are going to lose alot of business (at least mine, anyways). If I can't overclock an Intel CPU then I'm going to stick with AMD.:)

I don't really mind. After the massive amounts of cash AMD lost by people clocking their 2500+s to 3200+ speed, I'd do it too.

People act like it's their god given right to overclock...

Who says that it isn't? It's my hardware. What I do with it after I buy it is nobody's business but mine.

Precisely. Although the idiots who break the hardware and RMA it fraudulently after voiding the warranty are real scumbags and make you uderstand the manufacturer's concerns.

exactly...i love to overclock and have been doing it for 8 years...i hate it when i see people RMA'ing cuz they can't get enough OC out of it....Overclocking has always been a crapshoot...it just raises costs for everyone when people fraudulently return merchandise that WORKS WITHIN ITS SPECIFIED RANGE!

Well, I don't plan on getting into any religious debates, but...

I work at Intel, and my personal opinion is that once you've payed for the product you should be able to push it to the limit (in ways that don't risk damaging it) and get as much value from it as you can. And most overclockers do it at least partly for the fun of seeing how high they can go. Why wouldn't you want customers to have fun with a product they paid hard-earned money for?

That said - there's a world of difference between bumping up the clock speed (which is unlikely to do any harm) and jacking up the Vcore. People who do the latter and then RMA the chip when they kill it raise costs, and prices, for everyone - and that I have a problem with.

As for the rumor on the 925 chipset - I have no idea if it's true or not, and even if I did know I couldn't say.

I don't see why they would do that. They even have (in beta) a software app like Abit's, that will allow people with Intel motherboards to OC.

Kinda like when you buy a car, you can take off the catalytic converter & muffler? It is your car after all.

Yeah but you have to distinguish between modifying a car against environmental regulations (public policy) and just modifying your vehicle to go faster (rice rockets) which is not illegal. Intel has no legally enforceable right against overclocking, it can just void warranties.
