Anandtech Review

Sorry if it's a repost, did a search and nothing came up. Anyway, looks like Intel is extending their lead at this point, pretty impressive.

overated. Wait till end of next year. I really can't notice a whole lot of diffrence, and I have been on one for about a month now. It is good for WCG and Folding@home though. Can do quite a few WU fast.

No doubt it's a niche product at this point, but there's no denying that it's pretty impressive technology. Intel's pace lately is pretty impressive as well, honestly who would have thought we'd jump to quad core this quickly after the C2D release? Looks like a gouge to AMD's eye as much as anything else.

This is great I have a feeling that more software will be getting multi-core ready now that we have most processors being multi-core.

The good thing is (unusually for intel) they use the same socket and work with most existing core 2 motherboards so in a years time when they are cheaper, we all upgrade to vista (which likes multicore) and use heavily threaded apps (e.g. office 2007) it should make a nice upgrade.

Unfortunately, people have been saying that for almost two years now, and besides a handful of games, it has yet to happen.

I think vista will be more multicore supportive than win xp. Anyways, Quade at this point is probably gonna be under utilized by almost all software apps. However, considering how SLOW AMD is moving on their processor front, this will be another stimulant for them to speed things up. I read some older articles from 2 years back, AMD was even thinking about intro their quad tech. at beginning of 2008. That just goes to show how confident they were in thinking A64 core can stay on top. Essentially they sat on their butt and done very little except raise the X2 prices sky high for 2 years. Well now things are all catching up to them.

Yeah, but XP supports multiple cores. XP Home supports two, and XP Pro supports four. The people writing the software have been sitting on their collective a$$es, just like AMD, it seems.

Get a Core2 with a Quadcore compatible mobo now and upgrade to Quadcore in a year or so I guess.

yeah i'm feeling impatient too but it will happen:

valve on hybrid threading source engine

maybe by 2008 it'll be where throwing more cores will improve performace as much as today more gpu pipelines improves graphics performance without having to wait for software updated for it

Wow how naive can you be? Both companies have engineers working around the clock on better processor technology. When AMD or Intel decides to release new technology its due to market forces more than anything. AMD will release K8L when they have good motherboard support, enough supply to meet the demand, and a marketing strategy.

Hardware is going too fast for Software ...

Or is it that Software never bothered going beyond Hardware, and they had to eventually say "hey, why not going forward instead of staying still ?" ...

I'm a bit mixed up.

Nevertheless, PC technologies are going fast, and the prices are going higher even faster.

I don't understand why people think AMD was just sitting on their butt for 3yrs. Do the ones that says that not know how long it takes to bring out a new arch? It takes at least 3yrs in itself. AMD started on the new arch not long after A64 was brought out. Likewise Intel started the new arch around the same time. About the time they found out that they were not getting higher clockspeeds from a.09 Northwood, and thus brought out Prescott to hold them over.

Anyways, AMD and Intel are FAR from sitting on their butts. IT takes ALOT of time and tests to bring out a new arch.

We all aware that it take a while to put out new core but an AM2 intro with absolutely no change in core? At a time that's 2+ years after the first A64 core was introduced. This wasn't a conscientious effort to push their envelope in any way. Sitting on the top too long make them getting that old Intelitis.

Wow, I didn't realize that it's only been 3 years and 5 weeks since the Athlon 64 debuted: link. I take back what I said about them sitting on their keisters. And yeah, I already knew that it takes 1,000 days or more to develop a new architecture. I just would have sworn that it had been much longer than 37 months since the debut of the Socket 754 A64's; much longer.

No surrise and no great journalistic revealations...I already pointed this out when I reviewed my quad core opteron boxes.....No surprise on any of the numbers....

I will take one once they drop a bit though...
