Intel's 6-core EE i7-980X out and reviewed

Yes the Dells don't overclock yet the CPUs all did make it into Windows at 4.5GHz at 1.3 volts. I cannot be responsible? for hacking up $13,000 computers though.

Which reminds me I got an email this AM that six 980Xs are waiting for me in Miami. Honestly I have no idea what to do with those since I have only ONE 1366 socket board free. (P6T7) I suppose if they o/c to 4.4+ with a VX I can give the 3520s the boot.

Don't these come with a new four heatpipe cooler from Intel? I asked and they said they were not supplied with any cooler. Dammit! I always NEVER want the stock cooler (although I did get to keep the one from my QX9650!) and now I just wanted one to check out. Even worse is if I want the cooler they tell me I will have to wait another two weeks which means 25+ days for me. I think I will pass.

yea this is the new one

I have read somewhere forgot where but it was legit. It said the Core i9 would be literally twice as fast as a 975 or 980x Thats 50 percent faster. Where as these benchmarks show like the guy said like 11 percent increease which is not much.

For all with fast OCed quads it will be a big mistake to pay that much because you wont see the difference.

Wait it out, and after the 980x will come the i9 and that wont be 11 percent but 50 percent faster intel said. Pretty much twice the power of i7 980x. Im guessing they will introduce 8 core or 12 core when Core i9 is released maybe even 16 core.

Cores barely get used up slowly now devs are realizing they need to optimize for heavy threaded apps etc... thx,,

And here comes my friend raping me with 2 gulftown's overclocked on the SR-2 platform.

lol he got 10 points higher then i did off 6 more cores.

Ruby we lost... there's no hope in beating that.

Hmm, maybe they want to avoid the $1700 processor debacle that occurred when Intel launched the QX6700. This way they protect their super-high profit margin without actually jacking the price too far over MSRP.

edit: $.99 shipping! What a bargain.

What kind of storage does he have feeding those cores?

What good is a 7 second quarter mile if you have to slow to 80 to go through the turns?

I think he has a couple of the OCZ 1TB Z-Drives running just for the OS/apps, then a bunch of 2TB SAS drives for internal data storage, in tasty raid configuration off of an Adaptec 31605. Perhaps a 128TB external array on fibre/10gbit. That's if the 48GB of DDR3 can't hold the current work purely in ram 🙂

j/k of course, but probably something of that nature.

Just picked up my Intel Core i7 Extreme 980X Gulftown six-core from the Micro Center in Southern California this afternoon. Excellent launch-day prices, outstanding customer service, convenient retail locations. What more could you ask for? 😀 😀

Upgraded from a Core i7 Extreme 965 that also I got from Micro Center the day before Nehalem launch day (November 16, 2008). Just sold it on eBay a couple days ago. According to a recent conversation I had with Anand over Twitter, this hexa-core processor should be the first Extreme Edition from Intel that's actually worth buying!

Product Code: BX80613I7980X

Pack Date: February 24, 2010

Batch Number: 3003A957

Looking forward to some great experiences with the 32nm Westmere generation over the next year! The future looks bright for Intel regardless of whether the Tick-Tock cadence was delayed by a quarter, and I am confident in the company's continued engineering efforts for unique innovation in a world that now depends highly on the success of technological advancement. 😉

In other news, I just received my Sapphire Radeon HD 5970s back from RMA the other day. Long story short (full story here) - after two months of hardware and driver testing, I concluded that both cards were hardware defective right out of the box. All in all, this weekend is going to be one hell of a fun experience, and some of my good enthusiast buddies are welcome to come over. I'll post some benchmarks as soon as they're ready.

Hex core at 4.35GHz and 0.94V vcc? Am I reading it correct? Or is it a mega vdroop 😛...

True, but only if you have apps that can use that many cores/threads, and only until i7 970 comes (or whatever is the non-extreme 6-core).
It's nice though that this time the increase in cores doesn't come with a decrease in clock, hexcores with no compromises compared to top quadcores

he is running 1.4 @ 4.3ghz i believe

My 980 is better @ 1.388 @ 4.4

I see, thx. Out of curiosity, what is your correct vcore? Sorry if you've already posted...

4.44GHz at 1.325VCORE. That's a W3520 though.
Not sure how the 980s are doing though. They aren't saying a word. I hope they aren't blowing them up! They have six of them. As long as I get at least two and one of those two o/c to 4.2-4.4GHz on air.

I have been informed that Linpack does not heat these up nearly as much as Prime95. (!) Can anyone confirm this? Seems strange to me...

Anyone get the special version that has the white chocolate cooler?
Careful! That one will kill your MOBO regardless of what BIOS you're running. 😉

Holy mother of all sh*t on a biscuit.....THAT is a system Audiofreak.

Can we get a Vantage score?

Am I seeing it correctly no SSDs? 🙁

An SSD has done more for my system than almost any OC that I have ever done...

lol... i was playing with one for while now.

Im @ 4.3 because i tuned my VTT down for 24/7 safe operation.

And i really didnt see any difference on a SSD over 3 raptors in Raid 0.
However after 3 x GTX480's, that will probably be my next upgrades.

Dude! You are seriously using the wrong tools or just doing it wrong!
That's like someone put a four banger in a big truck and you said you cannot feel the difference. 😀

VTT should be low and it also has no bearing on O/C I'm told. < 1.4V They are also telling me some stuff I don't want to hear about these chips. Makes me wonder if I'm just better off tell them to keep 'em. 😱

(Or perhaps that's what they want!)

SilverStone Raven RV02

I scrapped mine because the HD5970 would not fit.
Then came the Classified 4X 762 and that only fits the PCP80A I have. What an oddball board size!
I was happy to see they put Marvell LAN controllers on here instead of those RealJunk ones.

Mine *will* be faster than yours:twisted:😱 Else, I will picket Intel.
