hi,
as some people know, a few months after the intellimouse optical was released, MS released another one with a better sensor (from 1500dpi to 6000dpi).

is there anyway to tell which one i have? prehaps the serial number or something.

thanx in advance

I believe the improved version is called the Intellimouse Optical 3.0. However, a very easy way to test it is to jerk your mouse around in all direction really really fast and see if the cursour follows your movements and doesn't go haywire. If it does go crazy, you have an older version. If not, you have one of the updated versions.

thanx for the reply, but isnt there antother way of telling?
the method that u suggested is dependent on alot of things other than the mouse`s dpi.

Yes, I have both and there is a physical apperance. The "intellimouse explorer 3.0" is a slim mouse and the "intellimouse explorer' is a bit taller and the buttons have changed a bit.

thanx 4 for the replys, but i think youve all (apart from Bovinicus) a bit confused about what i mean. let me explain.

as many people know, MS`s two top of the range optical mice are called the intellimouse explorer optical, and the intellimouse optical. the differences being, colour and shape.

what i was asking was that, a few months after the release of the intellimouse optical,
MS re-released it with an enhansed sensor. same shape, name and colour,
the only difference being that the 1500dpi sensor was replaced with a 6000dpi sensor.

what i want to know, is which version of the intellimouse optical i have.

The 1500dpi one or the 6000dpi one?

Hope thats cleared it up a bit

I've got an IntelliMouse Optical 2.0, which is one of the updated models. I remember trying to discern the difference when I bought this one a year or so ago. There is something about the part numbers that indicates the difference.

Mine is X05-92654 and, again, I am 99.9999999% sure that it has the updated optical sensor. (I believe I still have the original box.)

I have the original Intellimouse Optical... my part number is... x05-48976, if it'll help solve the mystery :)

I bought an Intellimouse Optical. It said nothing on the box about the scan rate. Part # X05-66545

The wheel and wheel button started sticking so they sent me a new one.

This one says right on the box that the scan rate is 6000. Part# X08-31896

I'm just guessing that if you have the 6000 version, it says so on the box.

I know what you're talking about and I have one of the originals with the improved sensor. Product Number X05-92652. A quick scan through MS's website didn't turn up anything.

Well, a surefire way to tell is by looking at the box - that is, if you're buying retail boxed. The newer version clearly states that it scans 6000 times per second at the back of the box. The older version says 1500 times. Also, IIRC the older box has a yellowish shape in front while the newer one is just all red.

If you're buying the OEM version, I believe the newer version is version 1.1 or 1.1a, so if you look at the bottom of the mouse you should see the version #. I'm not entirely sure if its 1.1 though. I do know that the newer version Intellimouse Explorers are version 3.0, but I don't think the version is the same with the Intellimouse Opticals?

thanx for the replys again.

on the box, it says the part number is X05-66547
on the mouse itself, it says the part number is X05-77975

ive just noticed, but on the box itself, their is a sticker that says "Now 33% faster optical technology".

as with what tenoc said, their is nothing on the box about what the scan rate was. apart from the sticker which says the above.

so ASUMING the mouse is the original, then the scan rate must be 1995dpi !!!

Well, I just did some shopping, and I came across the MS Intellimouse Optical retail boxed edition with the same packaging as the one BoomAM saw(33% faster crap). I think that's the older version, because I saw another retail box which clearly stated that it scans 6000 times/second. That box had a sticker with version 1.1 printed on it.

However, I also saw an OEM version with a 1.1A designation on the bottom of the mouse. I'm wondering if this is the same version that scans 6000 times/second? Does anyone know if version 1.1 and 1.1a are the same, or is version 1.1a the older version that scans 1500 times/second only? I need to know because the OEM version is waay cheaper and I'd get that instead if it scans 6000 times/second. Thanks!
