Intellimouse optical explorer freezing problem...anyone else have this prob?

My optical mouse seems to randomly freeze, but it's not the system freezing, it's the mouse itself (I can use keyboard, and other programs run at the same time with no prob). It does it in win2k and win98, so I'm guessing the mouse is messed up...anyone have the same (or similar) experience? Thanks

This could happen if there is a lot of hard drive activity on your computer. I would experience this when the computer was booting up but it could also happen between levels of Quake III when the textures are loading for instance. Switching my mouse from USB to the PS2 port eliminated the problem. When was the last time you defragged your drive? Doing that might help.

It's the mouse or software. Try uninstalling then reinstalling the intellipoint software. If you still have the same problem, contact Microsoft and get the mouse replaced. I had the same problem, and it turned out to be the mouse. Microsoft promptly sent me a new one, and it works perfectly now

It's not the drive activity - I've had other cpu-intensive programs running side by side, and they weren't affected at the same time the mouse was. It's also happened while nearly idle.
It's not the USB or PS/2 ports, I've tried em both.
Not the software - tried reinstalling it, and also tried it with win2k, where it used to work fine.

So that narrows it down to the motherboard (nearly-new P3V4X), BIOS settings (double, triple checked them), or the mouse.

Looks like it's time to call microsoft. *Sigh*.

mine was having fits starting 2 weeks ago.
the lights would go out and come back. really irritating when you're playing Unreal and getting fragged due to an USB mouse failure.
Too bad, I didn't register this otherwise I think it is still under it's 3 year warrenty.

Do you require the serial num to get the RMA, and if so, where can it be found? I've heard it's on the box, which I threw away months ago (I think I registered though )

Flip the mouse over, I'm pretty sure the serial number is right underneath the bar code. Try not to blind yourself with the LED though. . . .

strange, i had that problem when my mouse was plugged into the usb port. i changed it to the ps2 and everything had been running smoothly ever since. i doubt it's my hardware config or software, since my intellieye mouse used to run fine on the usb, it just uhh, kinda died out.

Alot of the freezing problems on USB have to do with cable problems. The cable that connects to alot of the optical mice gets loose very quickly, and eventually the mouse becomes erratic, or the pointer freezes, or the led goes out intermittently(sp?). I think that switching to PS/2 just might not utilize one of the connections that is getting worn away, or only uses some of them in a less intensive manner, making the mouse "behave." Its really rather annoying, and I think that for 45-60$ M$ should at least make some quality mice. At least they have a good warranty, and their RMAs are unusually easy. Ive returned 2 so far.

I'll bet it's the dreaded broken wire in the tail syndrome. Mine had it and was replaced...the mouse, not just the tail!
