Clarke's main argument?made in his new book, Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror, in lengthy interviews on CBS's 60 Minutes and PBS's Charlie Rose Show, and presumably in his testimony scheduled for tomorrow before the 9/11 Commission?is that Bush has done (as Clarke put it on CBS) "a terrible job" at fighting terrorism. Specifically: In the summer of 2001, Bush did almost nothing to deal with mounting evidence of an impending al-Qaida attack. Then, after 9/11, his main response was to attack Iraq, which had nothing to do with 9/11. This move not only distracted us from the real war on terrorism, it fed into Osama Bin Laden's propaganda?that the United States would invade and occupy an oil-rich Arab country?and thus served as the rallying cry for new terrorist recruits.

its not our fault, not clintons, not bush's, its the terrorist's fault. We did absolutely nothing to warrant 9/11. Nobody could have forseen what wouldve happened on 9/11, and frankly, terrorism wasnt a number one issue before 9/11 happened. Yeah, Clinton passed on Bin Laden a few times, but it was before he was public enemy number one. We should stop dewelling on the past and instead focus on winning the war on terror.

Exactly. Clinton was too busy messing around with Monica Lewinsky to do anything about fixing communications between the FBI, CIA, Police and other national security forces. He was in office for 8 years, and did nothing when it was blatantly obvious Al Qaeda was planning something. Wonderful.
 
The continued demonizing of Clinton really gets tiring. Can somebody remind me what Bush did when he got into office shortly after the USS cole bombing? Oh, that's right. Nothing. 9/11 was no more Clinton's fault than Bush's. People can play the blame game all day if it makes their little world of republicans=good and democrats=evil easier to bear.

lest we forget the bombings in NY the first time, embassy bombings in Africa, military barracks in Saudi, the Cole bombing...the list goes on and on...

Damn you'd think that ther Dub's and the Republicans first line of business when it won the Presidency would be to take precaution against these terrorists in light of the failure they witnessed from Clinton to do so. I guess they were to busy drawing up plans to invade Iraq to do anything about it!

And what did the Iraqi people do to warrant CIA stooge Saddam Hussein? What have they done to warrant sanctions that killed over 1 million people, half of them children, a price Madeleine Albright (the US) was only too happy to pay?

The US is not as innocent as Bambi or purer than Snow White, to pretend otherwise is to be out of touch with reality. And if the US does not recognize that fact it will not win the war on terror. Any action has a reaction.

Actually it can as the 9-11 commission determined planning and putting of resources into position started as early as 1997. That puts the terrorists on our soil for 3 years under Clintons watch and ~8 months for Bush.

It was an intelligence failure in a bad way but if you think Clintons administrations incompetence had nothing to do with this you are wrong.

Pretty well said. I'll add that it was an act of WAR on our own soil that we have since taken to foreign soil and will only hope to fight it directly there.
 
Its amazing how republicans forget it was Reagan and Bush Sr. who supported both Sadamn and Osama in the 80's. With intelligence as well as weapons.
 
more people should read richard clarke's book ...it gives a good understanding on our involvement in the middle east and how things have come to be.

WE gave the afganistani (sp?) "fighters" stinger missiles to fight off the Russians.

WE gave Saddam US support during the Iraq/Iran war (by support I mean Inteligence, Money, and we "sold" weapons to countries we knew would do business with Iraq).

The list goes on and on.
