Intell wireless....

Question...

If we get intel wireless supporting 802.11a now. And later they introduce the 'b' version, would the 'a' owners be able to upgrade somehow? Or is the wireless thing actually part of the mobo?

The way the Centrino laptops are built, I believe the wireless cards are Mini-PCI based, so they could theoretically be swapped out. Also, the 802.11b is the slower, current standard. 802.11a/g (much faster) is where things are going. Most manufacturers offer the option to get a better wireless card in the laptops for a small upcharge.

My uni currently runs on 802.11b, so b would suit me fine for now cuz I don't plan on using the wireless anywhere else (unless i decide to be fancy and make my home network = 2 PCs wireless).

I'm just thinkin' bout the a/g bands. g would probably be standard in time to come seeing it offers a's data rate and b's security. So if i'm able to swap out cards in the future, i'd probably give the intel card a go....maximise the whole 2 minutes extra battery life that it adds...

Its mini PCI based, so we should just be able to slap in another miniPCI card with 802.11a/g/whatever when it comes out, assuming we could find the cards somewhere.
