Intel X6800 or AMD FX AM2?

no contest, X6800, heck a E6600 is better than an FX-62 overall.

seriously, theres like 100000 zillion reviews that say the same thing including several at anandtech, did this really need its own post?

oh snap! i also need to know a good intel board around the $100 range or so. doesn't need sli. i'm generally pro-amd, so i don't know butt about intel really.

A $100 MB for a $900 CPU...
What R U smoking?

the c2d x6800 smokes just about any other CPU out there, including the fx-62. and the x6800 is dual core, making it all that much sweeter.

pfffft! what's wrong with a $100 board? most of the boards i look at that are $200+ have their $100 ranged counterparts that the only difference is no sli really.

yeah, buying the top of the line, unless you really have money to burn, is rarely worth it, especially if you OC. even an OCed e6400 can acheive near x6800 speeds, so IMO, buying that or an E6600 is a much better investment.

Maybe a $150 board, but definately not a $100 board. Why buy such an expensive processor and a midgrade (at best) motherboard?

At LEAST get a P5B or similar high quality P965 board. Unless you're getting everything top-of-the-line, I suggest going with the E6600 as well.

A E6400 getting near X6800 speeds? 😛

OP, wait for Core 2 Quad, buy that and this motherboard.

Such a simple question could have been answered in just 10 minutes of research. You could have just read a conclusion of any review of the two processors.

What if I was to say that the AM2 FX piss?s all over the x6800. You'd just have to accept what i say, or go and google it and find out for yourself.

Don't be so lazy.

OP - so basically you asked a question that 10 seconds of research could have answered, then asked for a MB that doesn't really exist at the price you wanted, then just bought a totally different MB anyways - wow, best post ever.

Anyways, for your furure reference, welcome to the world of Core2Duo - awesome performance, but way higher MB prices than we were used to with A64.

yeah well, i was trying to budget it out a bit, then someone mentioned the 6600 and 6700 is the way to go and the 6800 was a waste of money. so i decided on the 6700. that saved me $400+ so i could splurge a bit more on the motherboard.

oh, and no i wouldn't have just taken your opinion. i was gathering multiple ones. hence me posting in an entire section and not just PM'ing you asking.

There goes your $100 budget.

And worst of all, he got the crappy OCing nF4 chipset 🙁

I quite agree. Of all the boards that you can get for core 2 this has to be one of the oddest choices I've seen in a while. Especially with the nForce6xx just around the corner and the Intel boards being pretty darn good these days. Especially after he said SLI didn't matter.

Of course then I got a 6300 for $170, and a motherboard for $116 and memory for $180, and a $40 HSF, and OC'ed to 3.5 which kind of blows that X6800 out of the water... With the motherboard he got, I bet his 6700 can;t even beat me....

very few of the $200+ Intel boards offer SLI at all...

And yes there is something wrong in going low end on the MB if you're buying a $1k CPU.

Yeah, but I've seen X6800s doing 4Ghz so...

if you bothered to read, i said since i saved so much on the processor, i decided to just get a more expensive board. seeing as how i'm constantly getting loads of video cards, now i probably will do sli. i actually happen to have another xfx that is unopened i can throw in there with it. the setup i'm going from is my x2 4200 with an xfx 7950GX2, so i may as well just do the whole sli thing anyway. again. i saved on the processor so i got a more expensive board. please read my posts as well as everyone elses.

and what's wrong with the nforce4 chipset?

On a better OC'ing motherboard, and with water or phase change cooling...... Its your call, we are just trying to help.
