I have a Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 on a HP Pavillion dv600 laptop with a 1.80 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and 2MB memory and Vista Home 32 Premium , which I purchased about June '07 . The Intel 965 Express Chipset driver provided by HP was last updated Mar '08 , and I think this was just for compatibility with Vista SP Update anyway . Intel site updates this driver quite often , and I'm sure it must have improved performance after about 2 years . Can I use Intel's driver and install it on the laptop , or will this probably cause me all sorts of crazy problems ?

Performance in what? Games? Forget it. For everything else a stable version is enough :)

Thanks Qbah . So installing the Intel driver could cause stability problems , even if the driver itself is stable ? I have had a few problems with movie performance , for example .

Whenever you install drivers, there's always a chance it'll cause problems. Newer drivers often include optimizations and / or fixes for various problems though, so it's a trade-off.

Like Qbah mentioned, any Intel graphics product to date will have horrible performance for anything other than "home / office" use anyway. Forget gaming altogether.

I'd say this is a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
