Intel X25-V in RAID-5?

Hi,

I was intrigued when I read "Intel X25-V in RAID-0: Faster than X25-M G2 for $250?" so it stuck on my mind.

Now, I'm wondering what to expect if I try to create a RAID 5 out of 4 such SSDs? This is of special interest for me, since i need to create a multi-role web server, based on CentOS 5.4 x64.

Please share any thoughts that you may have concerning this setup, just keep in mind that I am budget constrained.

I will also include magnetic storage in this build. The controller will be the on-board ICH10.

Thanks in advance for your time.

It would be at least interesting to see. How much storage do you need? How many users? What kind of connection? SSD's + big SATA disks tends to be a good combination. I was thinking of purchasing a few X25-V's, but I haven't done it yet.

Well, for starters, I need at the very least 100 - 150 GB of space, system files and swap included. But since this server will consolidate many services which will span 4 separate dedicated IPs space requirements are going to rise pretty quickly - hence the need for larger storage. Anyway, FTP transactions, which have to deal almost exclusively with the larger files, will do just fine on magnetic drives.

I'd imagine if you want non-crappy write performance, you should definitely consider a better controller. You might not need a top of the line Areca or LSI, but definitely something better than onboard. You're looking at $100+ for a halfway decent one (not generic SYBA junk).

My friend has OCZ's in R0 (I don't know anybody using R5, so I don't know a lot about it). Fast, cheap, even without TRIM, he's using older firmware with an aggressive GC (at least I think that's him >.>).

@Jimhsu: I don't know, dude; I have thought of a controller myself, I just don't see it happening within the budget I've raised so far. I'm a bit reluctant buying a half-baked controller, and the ones that really appeal to me are ~ $ 400+

@MisterDonut: I've only worked with R0 and R10, with magnetic storage until now. My experiences with Raptors in R5 are best described as miserable, as they were severely crippled in writing, to the point where they hit single drive performance. I would never use such a setup for anything other than a file server. And yes, I'm a total SSD noob 🙂

It's just that I could never use R0 in a web server and be able to sleep at night. And four X-25 Vs in R10 would only amount to the colossal capacity of ~ 70 GB 🙁
