Intel X25-M G2 randomly does CHKDSK on boot

Hi,

I have a strange issue here on two machines:

One a Thinkpad T500, the other a self-build desktop. Both are running Windows 7 64bit (with the MS AHCI driver). Both have an Intel X25-M G2 as boot drive running the latest released firmware.

Every now and then both systems will do a CHKDSK on the boot drive when starting. CHKDSK never finds anything so i am not overly concerned. Nevertheless i want to find out what causes this.

Anyone has the same problem? I found a few on the net but noone had a hint.

Anyone has an idea what could be the cause?

Regards,
Gunter

What do your write cache settings under the control panel for the drive look like?

Are you applying any registry tweaks that change the program shutdown time parameter? The default is 20 seconds. Some change this to 1 second for faster shutdown which can forcibly terminate a service causing problems.

Check/change SATA cabling as needed. Make sure the drive is chassis grounded. (although I've used them hanging in the air without problems!)

Write cache is enabled, Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing is disabled. On both computers.

I am not aware of any registry tweaks i did on both computers (i never install "system optimizers").

I am almost sure it is not a cabling issue as i have exactly the same problem on a custom-built desktop and a Thinkpad T500 where i only swapped the drive.

Thanks,
Gunter

So the same drive is exhibiting the same behavior in two different systems?

I use standby a lot on both computers. Probably sometimes the X25-M is not properly flushed and the NTFS file system is still marked dirty. But i never get any errors on the CHKDSK.

I never happened with the hard disks which were in the systems before the intels.

Strange. What software besides Windows are you running?
I have not seen a self run CHKDSK in ages and I do all kinds of stuff to my systems here!

Both are mainly developer machines running Visual Studio 2008 and stuff.

Standby could be the problem. Turn that off and see what happens. I use no power management at all on any of my systems including speedstep, EIST, etc.

Hmm i would really miss standby on my laptop. At the moment i'd rather life with the random CHKDSK (i don't boot a lot). Thanks for the help anyway!

Strange.

Never seen that here either, & i've been using an Intel G1 & now G2s for over a year now.

I do and never had the problem with my 160gb G2 drive - win7 x64. I would think it's some software you're using on both machines that causes this somehow..

Hmm my guess at the moment is that some kind of software is messing up at the moment when the systems are going into sleep state.

That "kind" of software is most likely a driver. Problem is, that my two systems are running with a totally different set of drivers.

I'll have a look at the installed software on both systems.

I've got an idea what probably could cause this.

Both systems have one or more additional "rotating" hard disks where i store backups and "bulk" data (on the thinkpad i have normally always have a 2,5" drive in the Ultrabay).

System, all programs, user directories and data are on the SSD. I've setup hard disks to go into sleep mode after 10 minutes. At normal operation this means the rotating disks are normally suspended after a while because there is no file activity on them. I like that because it means a little less noise and power consumption.

Now when the system goes into S3 state it first wakes up the sleeping drives only to send them sleeping again.

Probably this sometimes interferes with sleeping the SSD drive correctly and the NTFS filesystem there is marked as dirty.

Hi,
Anyone has the same problem? I found a few on the net but noone had a hint.

I have the problem. My system is running an Intel X25-M 80GB (G2) SSD and a Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5TB (WD15EARS) hard drive. My operating system is Windows 7 x64 with the latest drivers including Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver 9.6.0.1014.

I have had the drives for a couple of weeks now and CHKDSK is running roughly every second day. No problems are found, but of course I do not like seeing those checks so often. I had no issues with the same system running with older (non-SSD) drives.

Edit: I have not changed the settings for hard drive sleeping, caching, etc. (everything is standard).

1. right click on "computer"
2. left click on manage
3. click the "arrow" next to the word "performance" to open it.
4. Right click on "Monitoring Tools"
5. Left click on "View System Reliability..."

What kind of problems does it show?

What kind of problems does it show?

Lots of critical events from Google Chrome with the summary "Stopped working." However, Chrome has not reported problems to me via the UI. Also, when looking at the Fault Module Name of the events, they are all related to "FOXITR~1.OCX" (FoxitReaderOCX), which is the browser plugin for viewing PDF files. I suppose there might be a problem when I "go back" or something in a tab that is displaying a PDF file.

I do not know if this could be related to the disk checks, but the events are occuring much more often than the checks (several times a day, I guess that is how often I view PDF files). I just now updated Foxit Reader from version 3.2.1.0401 to 3.3.0.0430. Maybe that helps.

Event example:
