Ok, I really shouldn't be getting into this, so this is going to be my last post on this subject. Many of you Intel haters are going to believe whatever negative articles are written about Intel, and there's nothing I can say to bring rationality to the forefront. Nonetheless...

AGS, you forgot the next part of that Cnet article... "By contrast, Gartner research shows that 2,601 Itanium servers were shipped in the third quarter..." Granted, they qualify that by saying that many demonstration systems were loaned out, but c'mon... 2100 of them?

Much more than 500 units were sold. Believe me or don't believe me. It really doesn't matter much to me. Like I said, if what's written is negative about Intel, many people here simply turn their heads and eat it up.

How am I supposed to know if Intel lent out 2100 Itaniums for demonstration purposes? You might be right, but you dont' know for sure either, and I'm certainly willing to believe IDC on their stats (and Gartner as well but, as cnet said, Gartner's stats included "many Itanium servers" that were for demonstration purposes).

Here's what cnet said in full:

In the third quarter--the first full quarter of Itanium sales--manufacturers sold just $13.7 million worth of servers containing the chip, which comes to less than 500 servers, according to market researcher IDC.

By contrast, Gartner research shows that 2,601 Itanium servers were shipped in the third quarter, an increase over the three shipped in the second quarter. The discrepancy between the IDC and Gartner figures apparently comes from the fact that companies have shipped many Itanium servers for demonstration purposes.

Let me point out the part that said "many Itanium servers" were shipped for demonstration purposes. While this isn't indicative of 2100 systems necessarily, it's a better argument than saying "Much more than 500 Itaniums were sold, believe me or not."

WINGZNUT, I don't mean to be nitpicky but doesn't Intel still have a building leased in the Cornell Corporate park off of us26 and cornell road? They did just awhile back...

That is in Beaverton city limits....

Ah that's right... they do have a little office building there (I'm not even sure what they do there). Heh, it's certainly no "skunk works", though. :)

I agree...I don't think it really has any ability to do any research or real technical work...I think it is likely to be some department for some of the other items intel sells...

Jones farm and ronler acres in Hillsboro are the real R&D campuses of intel....

We got guys out ther that have been working 6days of 10 hours each since october. There was ironworkers and rodbusters who worked 14 days straight...I know what you are saying this thing is going to be done at least the bulk of the structural work really soon....

I wish they would slow down a bit and keep work for our guys a bit longer...Is the need really there to havce it so fast??? D1c still has a bit of space, right? I know D1b has been ramped up to full fab staus...

I have been surprised that intel usually so safety consciuos has been really lax on safety as the accelerated schedule with its heavy hours is starting to tally up the injuries....

<<Promise us a V6...Give us a V6, but don't put the spark plugs in the 5th and 6th cylinders. Then tell us we can add a special additive (SSE2) that will make it supercharged...Intel's P4>>

Duvie-

If the "Linux kernel supports P4 SMT" reports are true, and the P4 currently doesn't have SMT enabled due to Microsoft's hedging, then its more like a pair of V4s. One V4 has its spark plugs removed. Why the two V4s and not a single V8? Well, the V4s tend to rev their rpm's higher whereas a crippled V8 would hardly run. The P4 definitely revs its MHz very high, especially on that special additive...
