Intel vs AMD

I am about to buy some software that recommends it be used with a 500 MHz Pentium processor. I am wondering if it is possible that this software will not run properly on my 850 MHz Athlon system. Can it be assumed that any software that runs on an Intel processor will run just as well on an AMD system (with a comparable clock speed) and vice versa?

I don't mean speed wise but rather is it possible the application just will not run or run with errors...

Absolutely. All AMD processors are 100% X86 compatible. Any problems you have will be caused by hardware or driver conflicts with the system...not the CPU.

Maybe that software heavily relies on SSE instructions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Athlons didn't have full support for SSE instructions until the Palomino core?

That's a good point, Spikesoldier. Perhaps the application makes a lot of SSE calls. Even then, an 850MHz Athlon would do just fine. What exactly, if I may ask, is the software you're trying to use, ddeder?

Actually it is for a customer of mine.

Even if the software is SSE or SSE 2 optimized it will still run fine on an Athlon.

There is no software so heavily optomized for SSE that won't work on an Athlon. There is hardly anything that runs better using SSE than Athlon's raw fpu, nevermind won't function.

Well, according to a Best Buy sales person talking to a customer about a game and pointed out on a game box that it was a Pentium only while the customer had an AMD chip. I about feel over when I heard that from a BB so called sales person. I decided to check on the box and it had a listing for x86 CPU too.

But, yes listen to everyone here AMD CPU's can run anything an Intel CPU can run.
