Intel vs AMD?

Oh great all-knowing AT CPU Experts,
I recently won an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 and was wondering if (basically) it's any good, or if I would be better off selling it and apply the proceeds towards a comparable Athlon-based processor instead.

I ask because I'm in the process of designing my newest creation, an upgrade for my current system (P4 3.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD), with both (current and this new planned system) being used for gaming; Flight Sim X being the most intense game I have right now.

I figure I'd check now, while I can still get a large percentage of its value back if I have to sell it, instead of waiting until it's completely obsolete. All I have is the processor, so I'm not out anything financially since, as I mentioned, it was won, not purchased. I figure either way I'll have to buy a mobo, memory and a video card; may as well see if the proc is gonna be good for gaming or if I need one of those too :p

Thanks!

Cliffs:
Won new Intel C2D Proc
AMD used to be better for gaming; are they still?
FSX is currently my most demanding game

Nope, Intel is king of the hill right now for gaming. That's a pretty decent proc, you could buy a mobo and some DDR2 and build a nice gaming rig out of it. You'd need a video card too, I suppose.

It's more than twice as fast as what you have.
Intel cpu's are currently better then Amd so yea go for it.

Thanks! That was basically what I suspected my research was pointing at, but wanted a second opinion.

E6750's do very, very well in FSX. Of course, they do alot better if they're overclocked. Also, in case you were wondering, a 9800GT would be a perfect match for that CPU. For whatever reason, FSX (along with FS9, and the other M$ flight sims) doesn't seem to really like ATI cards.

Get rid of the E6750,it's a bit old now.Get a E8400 or E8500 instead if you are fond of dual core,or a Q6600 is never a bad choice consider you can overclock it while taking the advantages of a quad core.

Wow, I am glad this thread is working well, I really didn;t want to have to lock it ! These usually get out of hand.

As for advice, every post so far has some good advise, I don't have a lot to add, quads are good, E8400 is better than E6750, and that is still twice the speed of yours ! Hard to go wrong with any of them....

You've got the e6750 in hand, just use it, it will be plenty fast enough.

unless you plan to start WW3 here, I think someone better moderate this topic. Or at least keep an eye on it.

I agree with Denithor

wouldn't be worth it to me to sell it and buy an E7200 for example. Only thing worth buying over this would be an E8X00 cpu (starts at $150+) or an Intel Quad Core cpu

What they said ^^^^

I just went from a Amd 6000 X2 To a Intel E8400 its a big difference.

The amd is good but c2d is better.

Keep your won cpu. Buy a new mobo and probably a better heatsink, overclock the cpu and everything will be very fast. If the speed you're getting out of it, doesn't satisfy you, then you can sell this one and go buy an E8XXX or a quad, like others have said here. But just try it first. In my opinion, that is a very good cpu, especially if you crank up his clocks and you won't feel the need for a faster one. ;)

By the looks of it, a whole lot of puppies have a long and healthy life ahead of them ;)

Advanced Micro Devices' processor market share slipped further during the third quarter, a trend that has continued since last year.

u won the chip use it.... as for the guys who told you to sell the chip that idea makes litle sense as the chip is still fast for your needs.

meh so intel causes more suffering to the world than amd's clean up of the dog populace ?
is that your point

I'd keep the cpu and just focus on getting the rest of the parts for your pc. :)

^^what he said. just get a nice gfx card like the 9600 GT or 9800 GT and some memory and youre good to go the asus p5q se board is a nice p45 board you can get for like just over $100 @ newegg, that supports 45nm cpus in case u decide to go quad next year.

happy flying

Forgive my ignorance here but I have no idea what you are attempting to communicate with your post

Are you making commentary on my post or Ocguy31's post? I cannot confirm nor deny your interpretation of my point until I better understand what you think my point was...please clarify.

what i'm saying is it is better to have a lot less puppies around than aids be rampant

AIDS = intel @ uber high prices

a few less puppies = the balance that AMD causes

I was thinking the same thing when I came in here. I'd imagine this will stay open as long as it stays on track and out of the gutter.

u guys are too funny...

there was tons of proof that showed us a spider platform is faster then an intel platform on some games.

the main key here is budget, and how much the OP is willing to overclock.

You cant blindly tell him that intel is better. Why?

Cuz a phenom @ 3.0ghz vs a Quadcore Yorkie at 3.0ghz, <--- very little overclocking required on both.

The phenom will keep up with the intel quadcore in games. You wont notice jack squat.

Now the overclocking wall on the intel is much higher, and also the clock to clock performance on almost everything else is also much higher.

So i dont understand how anyone can blindly recomend him a platform without asking his budget.

Spider with 2 xfire cards > intel with 1 single ATI card IN ANY GAME you look at.

Can we please leave the fanism out the door and think on the OP's behalf for once?
I understand now why the AMD people are leaving.

Also incase you guys missed his last game requirement. Its Flight Simulator X. A QUADCORE OPTIMIZED GAME.

You guys are recomending him a COMPLETELY WRONG PROCESSOR CLASS if your saying wolfdale.

LOL...

Op, if you have the budget, list it, if not, your processor is better then a X2, but a phenom on your flight sim X would beat it. Its a simple principle of 4 > 2, unless 2 = 2x (not possible here).

Last time i also checked the 9950BE edition was pretty darn cheap compared to yorkfield. :p

Lastly, there is no upgrading hardware from here. You change platforms entirely either way, so your at the end of the roadmap, so pick wizely OP.

Meaning its the end of LGA775
I also think its the end of AM2.

that is true.... i am not a fan boy but am confined to using amd now because of budget.... wanted to try the intel side but not yet due to small budget, each side has strengths and weaknesses.... i know amd is a little on the hot side but theyre worth it just get good cooling  i've always wanted to try intel but their prices werent really up to my tiny budget. so once again OP your chip is good just get a good board, memory, and card and youre good to go

Ah, I see where you are going with this now. Yes I certainly agree if the initial condtions and boundary conditions were as stipulated then I would have to agree more AMD marketshare (and fewer puppies) would be the far more acceptable alternative to more Intel market share (and more aides for Jared Fogle).

At any rate I have no control over the fact AMD continues to lose marketshare, just reporting the facts as they appear on the web ;) (puppies be damned I guess)

Depends which Yorkfield chip you're talking about. ;)

I agree that a quad is better for FSX, but the OP got the E6750 for free so its not like he made the choice to get a dual...

The best course of action would probably be to sell the E6750 and put the money towards a budget quad like the Q6600. I can't find it in myself to recommend the Phenom 9950BE for overclocking purposes when C2Q beats it so convincingly:
