Hi all Hope you can help
i am thinking of moving from intel to amd, as all my geek mates rave about um.
my current pc is a :
cpu= p4 3gig @3.6
mem= 2gig of corsairTx4400
mobo= asus p4c800-e
gpu= bfg 6800ultra 0c
sound= sb audigy2 zs
monitor= viewsonic vp201s
hd= 3X sata drives 1 boot 2 raid0 for data

I have been looking at the Athlon 64 3500+(winchester) and a gigabyte mobo GA-K8NS Ultra-939.and keeping the rest as is.

questions
1; will I see much speed improvment moving to this setup.
2; is this the right kit to buy (i cant afford to change to pci e yet)

Not unless you OC!!! If you get that up to a 2.4-2.5ghz you will feel it a bit more....3.6ghz is not too shabby....

In gaming I presume?? What I said above holds true...For real noticeable differences that is...

If you play a lot of games then yes, if not then you will probable not notice much.

I have just made a very similar jump and i havnt looked back for all but two things:

The intel chip is what can only be described as "smoother"

Old rig: abit ic7 max3, p4 3.0 prescott @ 3.6, 1 gb of geil ddr 466 ultra platinum (2x512), ati 128 mb radeon 9800 pro.

The only thing I have really noticed a drop in performance in is video encoding using canopus procoder or divxtodvd etc etc. Other than that I am 100% happy with the money I have spent.

Many things are actually quicker on my current rig, but as this is the equivalent of 3.9 - 4.0 p4 I cant really make an accurate comparison per say. All I can say is that the support for Windows 64 Bit is something to look forward to as well which is a bonus. I have tried the beta 1 of Windows XP 64 bit and it runs well but has lack of support for many of my drivers in 64 bit. It will mostly depend on what you do with your computer.

Web Browsing and games - deffinate yes - go for it
Hardcore video work - No, not worth it.
General Office use - Waste of money

EDIT: I agree with Acanthus in that with an ultra would be a relative waste of money.
EDIT: If you had an Athlon XP and were plauged with stability problems - dont worry they have it sorted :)

Hope this fares you well :)

quid sugests you are in the UK as well as me. where are you pricing up your stuff as i own a networking business and could point you in the right direction for some potential savings.

In that case for the gaming side of things you will love your (soon to be???) rig :)

I am saying you may see an increase in benchmark numbers, you will not actually notice any difference at all in games.

Personally I dont use gigabyte anymore as i have had so many rma's to fill in.
Asus A8N-SLI Delux is the board I went for due to hard drive capicity, I am 100% happy with it. Rock solid stable in my overclocked state.
The asus board is a bit more expensive at £95+ VAT but in my opnion well worth it.
I can run prime 95 for 3 days (restart was required for program installation)

Acanthus I must say that I would tend to disagree with you on that one.

So youre saying you can see 5-10fps? especially at 80+?

Id wager thats higher than the refresh rate of your display.

Im just telling the truth, you wont *SEE* a difference without looking a benchmark numbers. Going from 3.6ghz P4 to a 3500+ is just flushing money down the toilet.

Its the same reason i wont jump ship to a 4000+ anytime soon. Sure i could gain 5fps, but would i even notice 5fps? no i wouldnt.

It wont be a night and day difference, hell it wont even be a difference you will notice.

You won't notice a thing in gaming. Hypothetcially, P4 75FPS, 3500+ at 2.4Ghz 90FPS, not going to notice it. At ultra high resolutions with all the eye candy, the video card is the bottle neck, and you already have one of the fastest cards out, so save your money and wait to see what shakes out of the dual core thing.

good luck

i agree with acanthus on the extra 5fps. there is not a game out there that can push my setup at the moment hl2 1600x1200 everything on highest no stutter at all, same with doom3 and far cry im thinking more about loading times booting up etc.

Kini62: good point.
However georgestark has already stated that he wants to overclock and at the moment A64 is by far the best platform for overclocking. When you think about it I can out perform a watercooled Intel P4 system at 3.9GHz on an air cooled A64 platformed. Also many people like myself want to be running the best available, and at the moment thats an A64 overclocked in my opinion.

I agree for OCers, the Athlon 64 is the way to go, and in most benchmarks they are faster, but he was asking if he would SEE and improvement, and I don't think he will. His P4 at 3.6 is fast enough for whatever video card he wants to get. Only way to SEE an improvement in gaming would be SLI at 1600x1200 with everything maxed out, provided he used at least a pair of 6800GTs.

Still, if were me, I'd wait to see what happens with dual core, ATI SLI, and the next gen GPU. Then I think he will SEE a difference in performance.

I own a p4 3.2@4 and my wife runs a 64 3500@2.5.

Will you SEE a differance between the two?

Not a damn bit.
