Intel To Acquire Havok

Unless you put it on the chip...

Yup, the motivation here seems pretty obvious. Isn't Intel starting their own line of discrete graphics some time soon? Even if they aren't, it would be very nice to have some physics ability in an integrated chip, as well as a potential marketing gimmick.

I wonder if we're going to end up seeing the Havok Engine optimized for Intel-based systems at the expense of AMD ones...

I don't like this at all.
I rely on havok for the 3d animations I do in 3dsMax.
I hope they don't start optimizing havok for gaming and ignore the people that use it for animation.

That can't happen, because x86 instruction set and all the extensions (SSE to SSE4?) are used by both. In other words, both AMD and Intel try to optimize their CPUs for those instruction sets.

Yes, SSE2 worked better for Pentium 4 than it did for AMD - but that more of a special case.

That rumor has been floating around for years and intel has not offered a discrete graphics card in years.

AFAIK only Intel supports SSE4, and that support doesn't come until Penryn release. Also, it seems that AMD wont support SSE4 until sometime around the release of their "SSE5". If intel manages to heavily optimize for SSE4, which has shown some huge performance increases, this could bring a healthy lead in gaming to the intel camp.
