Intel system finally here!

Don't try overclocking unless you have good-quality memory. It doesn't cost that much more. I've had good success in the past OC'ing Intel but I decided AMD had a better value proposition for me this time (see sig below). Also, get at least a gig. I like having two optical drives, though. You're also right about the encoding, Intel's very good at that.
 
You seriously need to stop cussing in every sentence. You said you read enough of Zebo's sh!t yet you thank him. People will think more of you if you can post ideas without cursing every sentence. Just a suggestion, not trying to cause any problems.

Also do not OC until you get a new PSU. You are pushing your luck with your current one.

Overall nice system with some of the quirks noted above. Have fun, im sure everyone here no matter what they say would love to build a computer no matter what it has in it (to an extent obviously), that is why we post here 🙂

Seems like you made a good choice. I agree that the AMD PCI-e mobos are limited and expensive for the most part, and none of them can typically overclock well. You'll love your new rig. Make sure to get an extra 512MB of RAM for it. You'll feel the difference in having a gig. Sticking with value ram or getting nice RAM for an Intel system...hmm, dunno. If you've got the money, I say go for it. The only thing I'm thinking of that may limit you is the PSU. It will hold up to a moderate overclock, but I'm not sure how stable it will be past that. Always monitor your voltages. Good luck, and enjoy it.

anyways...

is 18 on the 12v not enough? even at 500w max, wouldn't that put it at about 400+ mean wattage? why isn't that sufficient?

When demonstrating you do indeed possess a enriched vocabulary, it is important to spell the 2 dollar words correctly or it detracts from the score 😛

As to the PSU, give it a chance and if it bonks move up to a better quality unit with a stronger +12.

water cooling will not help much if you are planning to max out the @presshot running the whole system with 18 on the 12v 😀 seriously, 18 on the 12v for a full @system rig with a 6600gt won't cut it for any higher stable oc....

preferrably get a brand psu like OCZ or PC Power & Cooling cost more but is well worth it imo (if you plan to get into overclocking).

 
Get a matching pair of some nice RAM modules, prolly a gig since that's not too expensive, and OC away. Just OC the 6600GT for now 🙂
 
so, apparently a new psu is in order.

so that leaves...

an mx1000, 512 KVR (or a fresh gig of the good stuff), and a dual 12v psu. thanks for the tips. i got a right hand man that's supposed to be helping me out. any good advice as far as putting it together? would it be better to do it in a tiled (or non carpeted) floor so as to reduce static, or is that superfluous?

You make it sound like Intel systems can't game at all. AMD is better for gaming NO DOUBT, but keep it real guys. Just a humble request from a downtrodden peon Intel user... :::::sniffle::::: 😛

Well, there are higher ones. For example, I have a 430W Enermax with 33A (thirty three) on the 12V rail.

 
Looks like a nice, well-balanced rig. I do agree that building a gaming pc with an Intel right now is equivalent to washing your feet with your socks on, but since you use it for a lot of other stuff looks sweet. Main thing is you're happy and that's all that matters.

that he may get 5fps gaming on an amd platform does not mean his system is useless for gaming. reallly.. what game is out he could not run well on his system if he chose to?
 
i'm trying to attach my motheroard to the case, and while lining it up with the holes it slipped and fell from about 1cm up. should i worry about that scratching the back of the mobo? i knocked it a lil while it was there, and it moved around a bit. would that scrape anything and cause damage?

where the hell do i get the spacers for 'tween the mobo and case wall? my case didn't come with them, nor did my motherboard. were these something i should've bought seperately? ... god, i hope i didn't fvck up my motherboard....


i know it's past two on the east coast, but maybe some of you guys out in cali are still fresh and can help me out. thanks
 
I would think twice before overclocking with a PSU like that. It's rated at 500W but only has 18A on the +12V? Makes you wonder what the hell the PSU is full of. YOu can easily find 400W PSUs that have over 20A on the 12V+
 
i was pricing them today and figured i'm gonna have to spend at least one hundred dollars to get one for overclocking. the 480 OCZ powerstream looks pretty decent.

anyways...

where we at on the mobo help?

only if the scratch was across a trace and broke a connection (would have to be deep).

normally they come in a hardware bag included with new cases (along with all the little screws and washers). if the hardware was missing, you could rma the case, but as that may be a big hassle, ck with some local computer stores.. any place that builds/assembles pc's should have spare ones lying around.

i'm phone taggin' it with the online store i bought the case from at the moment. hopefully, they'll be able to supply them for me. i'll toss the "RMA" phrase around and maybe they'll be more receptive to my perdicament. til then, are they generally one size fits all? should i be wary of possible differences in thread diameter with any replacements?

first of all, for many people there's alot more to a pc than just gaming. secondly, the amd simply isn't THAT much faster. hl2 for example is about 5fps faster on my a64 than my intel - hardly enough to make a big fuss about. sure, the amd is a bit faster in most situations (in my exp. on avg. about 10% give or take), but that doesn't necessarily make it the best solution for everyone. for the majority of people either will do just fine, and there are certainly tasks my intel is better suited than my amd..

I'm not gonig to justify or defend anyone's fanboy'ism if it was even in there in the first place. When I first read that comment at the beginning of the thread I moved myself back to the complete specs of the system; where I found 512mb pc3200 and a 6600GT (which makes sence cause the PCIe stuff is rather scarce or expensive). Both of which are not extremely bad, but I would say at least 1gb is where I would set my limit on a gaming rig; and possibly a better vid card. I just think that it was honestly just a comment that was not meant to undermine this guys computer nor stating that AMD was better than Intel for gaming.
 
well, i was referring to general comments such as the one i mentioned rather than pointing out people specifically.

i just find it obnoxious when people talk smack to others who can't afford or simply don't feel the need fpr bleeding edge performance, as if having a faster video card or processor makes them better people. while 'shurm' certainly doesn't have the fastest system available, it's still a well rounded system capable of doing anything that needs to be done, gaming or not - and while there's certainly ways it could be better, the top systems aren't THAT much better in a realworld scenario, especially when one considers many people are quite happy being able to run games well at 1024 with some aa/af.

and actually 512 runs most things just fine; there's only a few you will notice much improvement by going higher. i do believe that when it comes to memory, more is better (at least unitl you hit 1gb on desktops), but 512 doesn't really limit pc's all that much. in fact, i would recommend more memory for his apps moreso than i would any games he might play.

as for the 6600gt, it's not that bad of a card either.. iirc it's a bit faster than last gen's champ (9800pro/xt), or at least as fast, and should run most games very well at 1280 or 1024 with aa/af; i still have 2 systems which have 9800pro and they play the latest games just fine @ 1024 (doom3) and 1280 (most everything else).

 
the purchase was $505 shipped cpu, mobo, vid card and i think price/performance with oc is considerably efficient. i concede that i need more/better memory, but yes, price is a factor.

i KNOW the 6800 or x850xt will smoke it, but i don't wipe my a$$ with fifties, either.

...and i am excited about how it will handle games, especially since i'm coming off a celery.
