I've heard that the Intel HS/Fan combination shipped with retail Intel CPU's can be hard to remove. Is this true?

I'm wondering because I don't want to put the stock HS/Fan on if it is possible that I will damage/destroy the chip while attempting to remove it when my GOrb arrives.

There were problems getting the factory installed PII and PIII Slot 1 HSF's off. However, I assume that you have a FC-PGA or PPGA Socket 370. It'll be very little effort to remove later. Lark

One more Q: does the thermal pad stick to the CPU or does it come off easily when removing the HS/Fan?

Yes, I have an FC-PGA.🙂
 
Their not even put together so you don't have to worry about gettin them apart. The thermal pad is on the heatsink and should be very easy to take off. Just use your fingernail to scrape off as much as you can and then use some rubbing alcohol to get the rest off.

[edit]- Do you already have the chip and heatsink or are you waiting on it?
 
I have the chip and stock heatsink. I was planning to put them together so I could use my new proc until my Golden Orb arrives.

I'm basically wondering if the thermal pad on the stock HS sticks to the CPU when the HS is removed. Does it?
 
When you pull off your sink there will be some stuck to the cpu. Like Spencer said, it's an easy clean.
