intel stock cooler tricks?

playing with the stock cooler on a 6750... at 1.4v and 3.0ghz i'm hitting 73c loaded... the hsf isn't even that warm to the touch (unlike the nb on my nf650 board)... is there a gimmick to installing the thing? i just pushed in the pins... they seem to be in solidly... never used a hsf that just stuck into the holes before... i used the stock goop strips...

just curious what the expectation is since anand's 3.7 @ 1.5v in the cooler tests ran cooler than this... my ambient is a little warm @ 78f, but the mobo is not in a case...

Dude, it's a frigging stock cooler, your not cubeless, but clueless The anandtech reviews were ran with top of the line HSF, like tuniq tower 120 and thermalright 120 ultra extreme. Even those coolers will have a hard time keeping a e6750 cool at 1.5v. Tbh, it's no suprise to me you're hitting 73c at 1.4vcore under load. Maybe apply mx-1 or as5, that might help a bit ...

urp... i was quoting the stock cooler baseline numbers from the tests...

the question was regarding the use of a stock hsf, if there's any gimmicks, since i have never used the stock intel core 2 hsf before...

it cools down nicely with a 60mm delta out of my old stuff drawer sitting on it instead of the stock fan... and the quality and quantity of noise that old delta whizzer brings back some fond memories of oc's gone by...

Link me to the page where they have a c2d running at 3.7ghz at 1.5v that doesn't run hotter then 73c with the stock intel HSF ? And no, afaik there is no gimmick ...

look down under scaling at load... i may be wrong that this is at 1.5v, bu t i think that's what the setup said...

It shows the x6800 under load at 65c, when overclocked to 3.73ghz. I think thats with a CPU voltage of 1.5875V. For some reason I doubt the qx6800 retail hsf is the same as your stock e6750 hsf though.

If the CPU's at 73 and the heatsink isn't even warm to the touch, I'd wonder if it's making good thermal contact. Did you scrape off the thermal pad on the bottom, lap the CPU and the heatsink (not quite as critical), and spread a thin layer of thermal paste on before installing?
