I am looking to buy an SSD for my 2010 Mac Pro (6-Core, 3.33GHz) to replace a WD Blk Cav that I am using.

I am in Japan and the easiest SSD brand for me to source out are Intels. However, I am not sure which series is considered the frontrunner.

510 series
320 series
310 series
X25M series

I have read that the 510 series addresses an area (or two) of the high end market, but is slower in other areas. And the 320 series is the newest (3rd generation) of the X25M?

I`ve read many reviews and feel that all of these drives are good, solid performers. Just not sure which of them is the newest release/best overall performer.

Any suggestions?
 
They all perform well and in a double blind test with real-life everyday usage you will not notice much difference between any of them. This includes the original 2008 G1 X25M. The 310 is not standard SATA. I'd go for the X25M @ 120GB+ (released 11/2010) or a 320 based on price. Skip the 510 unless you crave a SATA III SSD. However even with SATA III, you will not notice a difference and even IF you do, I'm sure difference will NOT be worth the additional cost.

I agree with razel. If your system doesn't have SATA 6G, don't bother with the 510 series because it will be limited by the SATA interface.

I'd say go for the 320 series, because it is essentially an X25-M generation 3. The 310 series is not a regular drive that you can hook up to a normal SATA port.

The recommendation is appealing - if people can't tell the difference, what's the point in spending the extra money? Has anyone, or any review site, actually done a (somewhat) thorough double-blind comparison of SSDs?

Whats the point of a double blind comparison that you aren't doing yourself. You are better off going into a store and using a system that has one or a friends house.

Buy any of the ones that has the best deal and most space. Performance wise you won't notice a difference. SSD right now are the most you can afford with the most space.
 
I don't think you can go wrong with any of those you listed.

The frontrunner is obviously the 510 but I don't think its worth the premium in price. The 320 seems to be the best value in price for performance, but we don't know what prices you will be paying.

If the budget isn't a concern, go with the 510.
