Intel speaks- Will X25 get TRIM firmware update?

"Will the existing line of Intel SSD's be compatible with Windows 7 TRIM command? If so when is this likely to happen?

Intel answer

'We are currently looking at product intercept timelines for TRIM capabilities. Look for updates during announcements for upcoming product lines."

Sounds like they are intimating it will only be in a new product. Any other thoughts?

I'd say yes - just a guess though; money talks and others walk so if the cost is lower to do a firmware update while still making more than a projected cost of production minus the selling price of a new product then we can expect a new SSD drive... then again if it only needs a firmware update and they do make a new product for more marginal gains, then the evils of money get exploited again.

I think they would too. If OCZ can add TRIM to their less expensive drive I can't see Intel shafting people who bought such a premium product from them.

What's this TRIM command you guys are mentioning? Is it supposed to extend the life of SSDs?

TRIM is a command which tells the controller when a page is deleted, and thus the controller can then copy the pages with undeleted data of a block into cache, then wipe the entire block of pages clean, then replace the pages with the data from cache.

Its supposed to reduce / stop the performance degradation SSD's currently suffer from as they fill up and get "fragmented".

Translation - we like to do things in block-release format, we don't like to make "mini release" or "micro release" updates like microsoft does. With us you wait until service pack 2 is ready, it may be 6 months between service packs but we don't do patch tuesday, ok?

Translation - there is an update, we have it already but aren't about to release it just yet, see above, but the update is there and some day you should be able to find it.

Translation - self-explanatory.

Bottom line, whenever Intel is going to announce product line N+1 in the coming months is when you can expect them to likewise announce the timeline for their releasing a trim update to product line N.

Thanks for the translation. Assuming there is an Intel update, I think that it will coincide at latest with Win 7 final release. I really want to buy this product for several PCs but the cost is still high and dropping. I think I will wait for update.

I'm in pretty much the same boat. Have a fairly fast WD6400AAKS as my primary drive, want to get in on the SSD speed improvements (drastic from what I hear) but not willing to pay the high entrance fee just yet - especially for hardware that may not support a basic feature like TRIM with Win7.

Sucks having to wait though. Want those faster load times & etc.

I suspect Intel might be releasing a new version of it soon.

ie: reduce price of old drive to clear inventory. Then release new updated version with Trim capabilities, etc. built in. Its about time for an Intel revision everyone else has been through a lot of revisions / controllers in less time than Intel's drives have been out.

The 80GB MLC drives are going to be a Shell Shocker deal at Newegg this afternoon, so I think your speculation has some merit.

I bet Intel is going to release a new drive soon without the "governer" on write performance, and possibly TRIM support. They need to, to compete with these newer drives by OCZ and G.Skill.

It looks like they're lowering read performance a little (probably priority in the firmware coding) so the write performance is alotted more cycles (ie: speed).

Notice the progression in the releases.

Vertex: 250 read/ 180 write
Falcon: 230 read/ 190 write
Summit: 220 read/ 200 write

Like the total performance may be limited to around 425Mb/s cumulatively for the controllers, so they've been tweaking the write speed up as thats what needs to go up more, as read speed is already ridiculously fast at 200+mb/s.

I like the progression. Maybe I should wait until the next drive at
210 read/ 210 write... for perfectly balanced performance!!
