I get the impression that an AM2 may be a good bet right now because it will be forward compatible with AM3. Suppose I feel like buying a new CPU afte 2 years, does that make AM2 a better buy right now?

I personally am hoping to buy something before september, will Conroe Mobos be mature enough for me by then? For me, Mobo+CPU shouldn't go above 375 dollars.

Is conroe for me? And why ? Why Not?

yes, because it offers the best performance for your money.

With $375, you'd be to pick up a high-end motherboard and E6300.
I foresee ~2.7GHz easily with stock voltage/heatsink. And that's better than anything AMD has to offer.

In two years time, Intel will have higher-clocked C2D's, and kentsfields for you to upgrade to.
While unlikely seeing Intel's compatability/upgrade track record, there's a possibility 45nm chips will also be there to upgrade to.

Can't really lose going Intel this round.

Going into a platform that offers less for a CPU years away is just silly. Buy what's best today, and see what happens
