Intel rumoured to slash prices by 57% this spring

hmmm.... do they mean Intel will cut prices 25% this month and then another 57% later this spring

or

Cut prices 25% this month and then 32% later in the spring for a combined total of 57% for the spring?

Either way good deal

<< Cut prices 25% this month and then 32% later in the spring for a combined total of 57% for the spring? >>

Intel cuts prices every 3 months (usually by about 25% on each processor). They last cut in January and their next cut is in April. I've read two different April cut dates April 29th on these forums and April 14th on the Intel website (although I don't have the password to access the page that talks about the next cut, there is a link that says price cut April 14). This April cut will put the 2.4 GHz at the $562 price of the current 2.2 GHz, move the 2.2 GHz price to the current 2.0 GHz price, move the 2.0 GHz price to the 1.9 GHz price, etc.

In May Intel is releasing its 533 fsb processors. This will be accompanied by some more price cuts to distinguish between the 400 fsb and 533 fsb models. The second price cut is more targeted to the few processors that will overlap 400 fsb and 533 fsb. The combined cut in April and Mayl will be up to 57%.

Note although the prices of specific processors are cut Intel will keep the same rungs for now. The top processor will still stay at about $562. The bottom processor will still stay at about $130. The processors in between will still keep the same price rungs (just the speed on the rungs will increase).

Well I guess Intel can afford these types of price cuts. But then again they did the same thing last year, slashing prices of the P4 by 50% or so. It definitely didn't help them financially.

Actually, it's interesting to note that AMD already slashed their processor prices the week the AXP 2100+ was released. According to AMD the AXP 2100+ is $410 in quantities of 1000. Even though you can always find a processor for cheaper online, $241 is way too little. This repeats what AMD did last year, large "stealth" cuts.

AGS, Intel is switching over to 12" wafers. That more than doubles the amount of area per wafer (pi*r^2) compared to 8" and dramatically cuts manufacturing costs because you get more than twice as many chips per wafer.

Nice thread. Getting my P4 in May hope to get it cheaper by then or may just go 533. Like to also thank Dullard for the wealth of Intel info. that was a great post. thanks

Heh Maybe by summer I'll have a 3+Ghz P4(2.2+ overclocked) machine to play with. It sounds like a great price war, keep it up AMD/Intel!

<< keep it up AMD/Intel! >>

Well said. If either company got the chance to dominate the market like intel did, we would see prices climb so high again. So i hope they just keep slugging away at each other and give me cheap processors 🙂

Well, this is great for us, but to be honest, I think that AMD is gonna have a rough spring/summer/fall if price wars begin. Not only is AMD losing in performance and value with the 2.4 and 1.6A models, and to be frank, AMD really doesn't have the kind of headroom Intel does in terms of money. I think AMD has just got to hang in there, hopefully T-Bred will generate some competition for the 1.6A with a CPU like a 1800+ or 1900+ T-Bred being overclocked to somewhere between 1.8GHz and 2GHz easily, with a price tag around $100-150. That won't be able to take away a main reason (I feel) for Northwood's success (Intel 845-D), but still, it'll give people a good reason to consider the Athlon XP again because a 1.9GHz XP will easily compete with the 1.6A's running at 533fsb, and a 2GHz XP should compete nicely with the 2.4-2.5GHz 1.8A 533fsb ocs as well.

Intel does have a price cut comming on the 14th of this month. Then the introduction of the 533 and slowly phase out the Williamette

You have to love competition. For the fanboys who love AMD\Intel or hate AMD\Intel think how much we would be paying for a 400 mHz K6-2\PII without this competition.
