Intel Rumored to Launch Several New Haswell Processors in Q2[Maximum PC]

Bad news: Haswell refresh will be on the 9 platform chipset, and isn't compatible with 8 series chipsets.

Good news: If these Haswell refresh CPUs run on the updated Z97 platform, i'd be happy. That will give us upgrade options to Broadwell-K later on, i'm thinking? Broadwell-k and haswell refresh will use the same chipset platform. Both are using 9 series chipsets.

Like Willie-42 said in the '90s: "Ah feel your pain!" We'd like upgradeability through two or more processor lines. This all started with the entire concept of the PC in the '80s. Standard bus slots -- ISA, then EISA, then PCI and now PCI-E. Lose a part like a VGA card? JUst replace it.

But where is it going now? Socket 1155, socket 2011, socket 1150, and then a new socket 2011 that isn't compatible with the old one.

Can't count on nuthin' anymore, can ya? Ya gotta pick your chip and board at the same time!

ADDENDUM: Even so. The really important thing is whether they resolved the thermal limitations with their IHS and TIM. All this other trouble with de-lidding.

I suppose if I build any machine in the next year -- IB, Haswell or "revised" Haswell, I'll de-lid if I have to. But I wasn't very eager to embrace the hassle of it so far -- happy with my SB and Z68.

I have to just go for it already, I've had this chip for six months now running at stock clocks with the stock HSF. What method did you use to delid yours?

Well, the only reason I want X97 is for the added features like SATA express. I can't imagine Haswell refresh being a big progression over Haswell in terms of IPC. Maybe iGPU.

Broadwell K should be the real game changer in terms of iGPU and power consumption, and i'd expect a 10-20% IPC increase as well. But that's going to be closer to the end of the year I think.
 
As far that I know, there is no info regarding what Haswell refresh really is. It is a new Revision/Stepping? Is just the codename of some new models that are identical to current ones less default settings, like when AMD released their high end FX-9xxx that are still the very same Visheras?

I wouldn't expect an IPC increase. Especially not one greater than a tock.
 
Well thats promising that it will drive prices down on the existing haswell processors,which means ill be waiting till the summer to upgrade from my FX8320.

So the combination LGA 1150 & Chipset 8 is dead just months after release since there is no upgrade path, as I guess ShintaiDK would put it if it would have been AMD. 😉

Possibly, but I still have my doubts given that none of the documents used to substantiate that claim really do. No, they just state the changes necessary to support Broadwell on the HSW-R platform... which very easily could mean that HSW-R is an intermediary part that is capable of functioning on both platforms.

That's not saying that it couldn't happen, but making a pin-compatible part on the same process node and core design as the previous that's incompatible with the previous platform electrically would be a bizarre move for Intel.

Intel never works that way. generally it has always been.

1) new chip at higher price
2) old chip EOL
3) newer chip priced dropped to old chips price (once stock generally run out of the older chip)

As to a refresh, personally they are nearly not worth waiting for. Generally a 100Mhz increase on base clock, similar or same turbo speeds.

Things could be different as there could be a totally new Low powered CPU, but i get the feeling those are limited to OEM manufactures and not over the counter customers.

Haswell Refresh works on 8 series. They are nothing more than speedbins.

Only Broadwell-K and E3 Broadwell Xeons need 9 series or a modified 8 series board.

Prices will be the same as for todays models. They simply replace them.

Wouldn't that also mean a proportion of mobile CPUs,ie,those without the top branded IGP will also be Haswell?? The current desktop and laptop GT2 dies are the same chips,with different binning.

There will be a Broadwell-K desktop plus E3 Xeons. This is not news so I dont understand your reaction.

Servers and mobile gets Broadwell. Its a capacity issue because Cherry Trail comes before desktop in node terms. Skylake will be released for Xeons, mobile and desktops at the same time. Since 14nm capacity is big enough at that time.
 
I think it had to do more with the 14 nm wafer costs, although the lousy yield they were getting early on surely played a role. So only high margin parts and the super small Cherry Trail. I don't think this is the last time you will see a "Refresh" part from Intel.

Still think Broadwell-K isn't going to have any IPC improvements besides what the added L4 can give and the CPU will overclock worse. I do wonder how high people will be able to get the GPU though. So don't get your hopes up.
 
Skylake from all i have read really looks like the upgrade everyone including myself will be jumping to, just hope its still next year.
 
So nothing actually HAS a "K" next to it. Does this mean we get no unlockable refresh, or will the 4690 and 4790 have "K" versions as well?

I'm there with DigDog, as I just got my 4670K on, like, December 29th. It sucks that the first time I go Intel, they annoy me like this.
