Intel releases P4 3.8

Woo-woo! That's it - Intel has turned the tide! AMD is dead now, nothing more but a whimper 😛 .

Seriously, this goes into the "nobody really cares" bin. 200 Mhz more for intel, probably 20 more Watts to get there also.

On the plus side, these things will probably be easy overclockers to 4 Ghz 😉 .

what the hell do you people want? a jump from 3.6 ghz to 5 ghz? intel tradtionally uses 200 mhz increments

will it cost a lot? of course, but so does AMDs flagship chips
 
i think it's pretty impressive... intel has been able to hit close to 4 ghz...

the 3.8 should overclock to 4.0 easily...

also... who cares about these p4's....

the dothan's is where it's at!!!

these things are gonna rule... clock for clock they are almost as efficient as the a64's...

the dothans are gonna give amd a run for their money...

let's stop intel bashing please... increase the peace!!! unity!!!

Do remember that the Dothans are running 2MB of cache while the A64's are generally running 512K (some on a Meg). So, the A64 does still have a leg up on the Dothan's design for IPC.

If Intel is serious about bringing Dothan to the desktop (and they appear to be), they will have to add SSE/SSE2 (SSE3 also, perhaps) to the architecture, which will add more trannies to the core (transistors, not the other thing). I don't think Intel would shrink the L2 cache size, but just adding the SSE's would probably prevent them from putting any more L2 in there (as would common sense - how many transistors is this puppy going to have!?).

Nonetheless, I'm also looking forward to DesktopDothan (TM) . Especially on dual core 😉 . But I think AMD is going to give them a run for their money, no matter what they've got up their sleeves.

I'm optimistic that you and Duvie will take whatever Intel puts out and find a way to o/c it much better than the rest of us (like your P4 3.0 @ 3.5, or was it a 2.8 @ 3.5 that I couldn't match by hand picking 3 separate 2.8's myself ... 😉 . I topped out at 3.3 Ghz for Prime and Windows stability ).
 
I'm running the original Pentium M (not even Dothan) in my laptop. It has SSE and SSE2 already. I don't think SSE3 is really all that useful, and with only Prescott supporting it so far, it won't be a requirement for running applications for quite some time.

I just know that my P-M 1.5 GHz is damn fast.

And maybe force AMD to drop prices too?

Too bad intel didn't extend the Northwood line further INSTEAD of introducing Prescott. . . . . i bet they'd have well over 4.0Ghz by now - and cooler too.

Not that anyone will care considering how good dothan's are doing on that new DFI board. I would like to know if the 3.8 goes above the 115w heat output of the 3.4 and 3.6 procs.


I just finished prime testing my 2.26B at 4ghz overnight on my p4c800 w vdroop. So yes northwood can do 4ghz. Took ~ 1.625vcore min.

That's a lot of extra voltage. 😉

i am hoping the very last steppings of the NWs will do it regularly (within my 'acceptable' +10% voltage range). It'll make a nice improvement over my 2.80c @ 3.31Ghz o/c.

Intel blew it on 4GHz Pentium 4, Otellini says
IN A QUESTION and answer session during an internal webcast, Paul Otellini, Intel's president, was asked why the 4GHz Pentium 4 microprocessor was killed. The questioner asked: "Why was the 4GHz processor killed. What's the scoop? Did we just blow it again?"

Otellini answered that question by saying that at one level Intel had to say that yes, it did blow it. It had the 4GHz Pentium 4 in its road map and it pulled it off the roadmap.

But that didn't mean Intel wasn't capable of producing a 4GHz Pentium 4. It was. But, Otellini told Intel's worldwide staff, it was pulled because the company intended to get back to a 90 per cent confidence level on both its schedules and its road maps.

Intel doesn't have infinite resources and had to make choices.

He said it was more important for Intel to move to 2MB cache processors and to get to dual core chips faster. Intel would have to have done another stepping for the Prescott core to get to 4GHz and 4.2GHz and that would have been counterproductive "in the grand scheme of things".
