intel ready to launch itanium 2

A FOUR WAY Itanium 2 machine which will be launched in July is on display at the Intel booth in Computex.

The machine, codenamed Bandera, is a ready to run system for integrators and people who might want to rebrand the box.

The machine was not running but comes with instructions for integrators on the top of the box. No details of pricing were available.

They benchmarked it, although prematurely, and it DEFINTEly SLAUGHTERs the yet-to-be-release UltraSparc III 1Ghz.

While runnign hte Internet-based Commerce RSA SSL-CBenchmark


Itanium2(dual Processor setup) 1440 SSL transactions per second ..about 3 times as high as an eight-processor UltraSPARC III
server

About 50% more transactions than a comparable system...



Runnig the MP linkpack 10k Benchmark....13Gigaflops

These are not official benchmarks as they have not been submitted for open review;just numbers given to Eweek by Intel...but still...promising nonetheless



Appearantly they are maxed out a 8 processors if I am not mistaken or is it 32...still giving Sun the edge when It comes to 32+ cpu servers...



 
"Intel's E8870 chipset will enable 2-way through 16-way multi-processor Itanium 2-based platforms. OEMs can design up to 512-way configurations based on the Intel E8870 chipset and its Scalability Port technology."
 
Once Microsoft ships 64-bit versions of .NET Enterprise Servers and variations of Linux and Unix are ported to Itanium 2, this processor will kick ass.
 
The preliminary SPEC scores are pretty impressive as well, I think.

It's been a long journey. I started working on McKinley back in 1997, and I'm still spending a little bit of my time on it. I did the store and fill buffers and associated circuitry for the level 1 data cache. It's been a great project with a fun team. I sure hope it succeeds. It seems like it has the performance it needs. I had the feeling when I was working on the design - and I still have it - that we were making a chip that will be remembered for quite a while. I guess we'll see.

Windows .NET Server, although I believe that it is optimized to run on Merced Itanium. And maybe Linux?

yeah, but what about software programs? DB servers, web servers, etc? Don't they have to be ported to the platform?

That's the problem. I haven't a clue whether or not Microsoft will port the .NET Enterprise Servers to 64-bit. You can probably run IIS on the 64-bit .NET Server though. 😀 :Q 😉 😛
