From the Q2 Earnings conference call of Intel, Paul Otenllini the CEO stated that the desktop and server version of their quad core part (Kentsfield for Desktop and Clovertown for Server) has been pulled from a Q1 2007 launch date to a Q4 2006 launch date.

Any news on when they will release the "real" quad cores?
You know, all on the same die?
Wonder if the performance metric will be simular to the 8xx to 9xx

Sorry, no link for a printed source (there is none since the source is audio, maybe in a few hours), however you can listen to the conference call recap once its over around 3:30pm PDT. Paul talks gives a statement about Quad core very early in the conf. call; about 5 minutes in. You can listen to the conference call replay (or live right now, if you wish) at:

http://biz.yahoo.com/cc/0/64110.html

While listening to the Intc conference call, this blurb about Quad Core caught my attention. I decided to share it here about 2 minutes after it was said;)

Thanks! Listening now.

EDIT: They are talking about high inventory, is that mostly Pentium D or Conroe built up?

From the discussion, it seems most of it is from P-Ds, but that was expected. What surprised them was the fact that Conroe/Merom Qualified in Q2, which accounted for an extra $200 million in inventory that wasn't expected.

this is cool!
I am still playing Prey and the lengthy Titan Quest on my old P4-2.4C, with extremely slow progress. When I am finally done with both, maybe Kentsfield is available already :)

You just hear that? Intel says Core 2 Duo will be fully stocked in the retail channel at launch. BS or not? We shall see.

Yep I just came here to post that. I'm sure it isn't BS, as if it were, there would be huge backlash from lying in a conference call. I think the fact that some people have already bought Conroes from some channel distributers proves the channel is being filled as he said.

He also characterized the Core architecture's ramp as "much faster" than Netburst. IIRC the P3->P4 shift took about a year, so we should see almost entirely Cores by the end of Q1'07 with all the P-D's out of the channel. Nice.

So if Conroe's are in short supply, that means theres only one reason ....... etailers and retailers trying to make an extra buck!

They may do just that, but with EVERY etailer having them....that price won't stay long.

This is very good news if it comes to pass. I hope Intel can execute on this new timeline for Quad Core introduction.

This would be a siler bullet for AMD, but it will come at the cost of Conroe sales - who's going to buy Conroe if Kentsfield is less than six months out?

Kentsfield replaces the extreme edition of conroe processors and I for one do not value computers enough to purchase a such a premium processor.

It's enough for me to switch my E6600 pre-order to E6400, so I save $150-200 or so over my E6600 pre-order toward a Kentsfield. Since they weren't slated to even launch until likely late Q1 2007, and now are slated for sometime in Q4 2006, I imagine they'll introduce lower-priced models by then. I'm sure an 8x multiplier E6400 with a 400-430 FSB could tide me over just fine ;).

As said, Kentsfield is going to be the new Extreme Edition temporarily along with possibly one lower model than it. So, I'd expect prices around $700-1000 for those initially until lower models are introduced more widely and production ramps up.

So you save $150-200 off of a $1000 extreme edition processor. That's still more than I'm willing to spend.
